Hi Guys,

We had a fantastic time at this festival last weekend! It was up in Bowling Green, KY. We showed our instruments, and an overall good time was had at the RedLine tent!

Curtis Burch was, of course, the reso. player for the Newgrass Revival. He played with his own band at this event, and he helped out some of the other bands too. I don't see Curtis mentioned much on these reso. lists, but he is a great picker, and a very nice guy. He played every RedLine reso. I brought with me (about 6) and he showed me a great string winding trick for which my fingers will be forever thankful!

Some time ago, I set up a RedLine "fan" page over on Facebook. Here's a link to a photo album with a few pictures of that event, Curtis, etc. Sorry I didn't get any pictures of Sam Bush playing. I was too busy watching him when he was on stage!

Here's the link . . .

If that doesn't work, you can just go to Facebook and search RedLine Resophonics. While you are there, feel free to become a "fan". We post most new info there first.

Back to the festival, this one was a huge success, and only their second one. They are already making plans for next year's festival. You can find them on fb too, or go to their website at newgrassfestival.com. See you there next year !!!

Slideman relates: Last year Curtis Burch came up to central Pa. to the Grillbillie festival "O.A.T.S.-Out among The Stars" Benton Pa .11th annual. In addition to playing on stage Curtis also did a Dobro workshop. His skills were impressive and that tailpiece thing with the levers for quickly adjusting to different tunings was fascinating. Off course those at the workshop knew who he was and we were wondering where he was for the last 20 years---he seemed to have quietly dropped out. It is great to see that he has recently gotten more active and is now out and around again at festivals and workshops. Curtis "revived" is a treasure and if you get a chance to see him in a dobro workshop, he has neat moves to teach, that the average person hasn't even thought of--very skilled. Welcome back Curtis.

curtis was an instructor last year at the reso summit,, and one of the best and most prepared instrutors there!,, he taught a class on harmonizing notes on the dobro and how to use them in a song,, instead of the same old same old,,really opened my eyes,, I look at his tab hand out from that class a bunch,
he had his brother playing guitar ,his wife singing and they were amazing,, curtis is also a very nice guy we talked a bunch about the old new grass days in the 70's,,
there is a Youtube video of him and sally vanmeter that is worth looking up,,

I didn't get to make it this year because I was moving my daughter into the dorms at U.K., but I did make it last year and was really wanting to make it again.

Last year I hesitated about approaching Curtis Burch out near the parking area, but did introduce myself and said I had just acquired a dobro and was trying to learn how to work it.

You know what the standard response to that would be! He talked to me for ten minutes or more about learning materials, how to get started, what to avoid, and what to strive for. He suggested recordings to listen to, learning tools to use, and just generally was more interested in my beginner's concerns than anyone had ever been before. It was astounding.

Hey Terry! Now that I've gotten to know you, your profile picture makes a lot more sense...

Yep, that CoverGirl is a sweet one, for sure! She's resting up a bit after being "rode hard" all weekend. Hearing all the great players having her way with her at the Alabama get together has inspired me to go to the next level, and get the Peabody Covergirl into the finish room this week. This one will look the same, but have the larger body and maple all the way around, including the sides. The one you fell in love with (yes, I noticed) is a bit of a hybrid, as it has mahogany sides coupled to a birdseye maple top and back.

If you really want that CG, let me know. I'm sure we can work out something.

If I remember correctly, Curtis was the dobro player that help start the Gibson Brothers. His son played with the also. He recorded on most all the earlier CD's. And absolutely, he is some picker.

Curtis Burch does some amazing picking on the Southern Philibuster album. A tune called Black Ridge Ramble. Possibly my favorite on the album, for now anyways

I think it was Junior Barber on dobro, and son Mike on those early Gibson Brothers' albums.

Hey Preston --

It's good to see you posting here. I miss your posts Over There....

Thanks for teaching a few of us Choctaw Hayride the other day. At least now I can hack my way through playing back-up guitar on it, I think...

The Gibson Brothers were one of my favotites when they had Barber on dobro. I think they replaced him with a mandolin player, and lost me.
