Just got my new squareneck and it could really do with some new strings. The guy in the shop wasn't all that helpfull so Im wondering what guage strings people find best or does it really depend on style or just what you prefer. Wound, unwound etc. Many thanks. Steve

Steve, your right, personal preference. The most popular are the D'addario EJ-42's and the Beard BR-78 and BR-79. Anyways there are many others used but from what i see, these seem to be the most popular. I am using the EJ-42's right now, but next string change I will be trying the Newtones. I put the Newtone Aloha's on my Wessie and I love everything about them. FWIW

Slideman uses Beard special 28's (Resophonic Outfitters/ Paul Beard mostly and sometimes GHS bright bronze in typical squareneck guages.

I used EJ 42's for a long while but, thanks to Ivan Guernsey's suggestion, I have began using GHS TS1600's. I really like them a lot.
Just received a new cherry Harlow and he uses Black Diamond strings .. sound good and they aren't even broken in yet... ,maybe an hour of play.

Trapper, my James came from Dave with Black Diamonds. He swears by them. A little pricey over the EJ-42's and I really didn't notice any difference. The ones I am anxious to try are the Newtones. The Newtone Aloha's I put on the BC are truly outstanding in sound, feel, tension. I just cant say enough good about them. I am going to have Malcom send me a couple sets for the res when I get the Aloha's. FWIW

I used to get the Martin SP-1 strings from Erik Waynesmith before his passing and I still have about 20 sets of them and will not be buying any for a while. I liked the 16-18-26-35-45-56 gauges. I will likely go back to EJ42's with the 28 gauge 3rd when this supply runs out. I just bought a myrtle wood Mastereso from Phil Dean and that one has GHS 1600's on her. I will be interested to see how they sound, they have the 28 gauge 3rd as well. I do not play very aggressively, so strings tend to last me a while and the heavier 3rd string is not really important to me. I cannot tell the difference in the sound, although I am sure that others can. I think that you playing style and your particular guitar will be the deciding factor in what strings you choose to use.

Dean, I think you are going to love those Martin strings on that Mastereso. I wish I had bought more of those when I had the chance a few months ago. Want to sell those.

Phil, Those strings are collectors items now, no doubt worth many thousands of dollars. They reside in my safe . I wish I had known that you really wanted them before I sent you the check Dean
