Hey everybody,

I'm not looking for another "best capo" thread here, but I'd like some opinions on the Leno capos. I know they stopped making them quite a while ago, so there are a lot of us that never got to try them. They seem like an interesting design from what I've seen and heard and I just wanted to know how past and/or current users have liked them? Do they sound good? Are they easy to put on and take off (i.e. one handed)? Any other information you can add would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Brent......I had one and sold it. It worked well but didn't work as efficiently as I had hoped. Not that it was a bust, it just didn't work with the ease of my Bradley. Plus I had a very difficult time trying to make it work one handed. I've gone through 4 others and still use the Bradley.

I've got an extra if you want to find out first-hand. Works fine, but I prefer the Bradley. Send me a note if you're interested.

Yeah, the general consensus is the Bradley is tops to almost any capo out there. I have to agree with that, but I just wanted some opinions on the Leno. It seems like a quality design, so it couldn't hurt to ask. Thanks for your time guys.

I talked at length over the phone with the guy who made the LENO. He paid for sound tests to select the "best" brass alloy. It is a shame that the Chinese were driving the copper and brass prices up to the point where he didn't feel he could sell them any more. I am happy with my LENO, but then, I haven't tried the Bradley. In my opinion, it is either one or the other. The Shubb is a joke and the Beard is difficult to apply with picks on.

I am th person who bought Preston's LENO capo.

I had one that I gave away. It was too much of a hassle to put on. A two hander for sure. Also, the rubber didn't stand up well at all. I like my DeNeve.

I had a Leno and sold it. The one thing I didn't like about it was that if you didn't hold it right when removing it, it would snap off and bang the neck. I've been using the same Fluxcapo since around 1981.

I just got some Bradley capos in today, just in case anyone wants or needs one. You can buy them directly from our website, quick and easy.

I have a hard time grasping the idea that an increase in cost of the tiny amount of metal in a capo makes it suddenly unprofitable. As I remember, he was wholesaling these happily to Elderly and a few other places at, what, 50% of list? Doesn't seem like "blame the Chinese" quite fits here.

I've heard that a properly dialed-in Shubb works and sounds great, though kind of bulky and cumbersome.

He told me that the manufactured cost was exceeding $40. Brass has come back down some, I don't know if he'll start making them again.

Did you see Greg's post on RN where he lost his and was looking for one? He love's 'em. I wonder just how many he bought? He had a lot of offers.

$40? Seems kind of inefficient, and it's sure not in the cost of brass. Brass scrap's around $3/lb - the capo weighs a bit under four ounces. Even assuming that his stock costs twice the scrap price and he's got 50% waste (8 oz, @$6/lb, less scrap value of 4 oz. waste at $3/lb), his material cost would be $2.25/capo.

There was a post on R-N about Redmond's tools and equipment being taken by some relatives that might explain his dropping out of the capo business. This would seem like an excellent project to foist off on a small CNC machining operation - let them quickly and efficiently knock out parts for a hundred or so, then assemble and polish as needed.
