Hey guys,
I have a Rogue Classic Spider Reso, and am thinking about upgrading it. The body and neck seem very high quality (for a rogue, that is), but the cone and spider look pretty much like junk. Is it worth it to get a bunch of new parts (tailpiece, cone, spider, etc.) for it? Will it really make the sound that much better?

Thanks!

I would think a new high quality USA spun cone, spider and maple/ebony bridge inserts would benefit the sound most-along with a bone nut,and it should certainly be worth that upgrade-provided it is setup properly.Beyond that,I wouldn't spend a lot on it-a better quality USA made reso would give the quality sound for not too much more if you shop around.

In my experience they sound a lot better with an upgrade like youre planning. It wont turn it into a booming big body post & baffle custom instrument, but you'll be more than satisfied with the improvement, a much fuller, richer tone. Play better too. It's a great way to get to know these wonderful guitars. Make that zen connection with your instrument, you know. While you're in there make sure you clean it up real good, get rid of all the excess glue, varnish, shavings and dust. Sand the sound ring smooth and make sure it's level. A tinkers delight, have fun!

Ben,

I just went a similar route with a Regal resonator. They are probably very similar, maybe even the same just with different names on the headstock. Refer to this thread to see my results:

If you want to talk with Steve about it, (the gentleman that helped me with my upgrade) he's a regular here and goes by Steevarino. You can email him from his homepage:

As to your question "is it worth it?", I thought it would be to me since I don't see myself upgrading to higher dollar resonator in the near future. Until I do decide to upgrade, I wanted my reso to sound as good as it can. Ultimately though, only you can decide if it's really worth it, but Steve makes it relatively easy with a Quarterman cone and his RedLine Reso spider.

Hope this helps.

it can't hurt, all of those parts you can keep if you ever sell it, it will not be a loss. I upgraded a morgan monroe and a hound dog. they both do pretty well, but they are not a post and baffle. Hoping to have Tom build me one, I think I have a buyer for my hound dog, I had a local dobro picker named Josh Hollifield pick on and he liked it. go for it! I enlarged the soundwell holes on the front holes and it greatly improved the tone and volume. I have never played a post and baffle reso, but I like what I hear and I suppose that players are'nt going that way for no reason. happy tinkerin', happier pickin'. ps Tom I am saving my $ and will be getting with you sooner than later. awesome site here

I'll tell you guy's i get about 4 to 5 hours of picking on that thing every day and then come home and get on the real thing and put another 4 or so hours in.I figure in the past year or so i've been picking that thing. It ad's up to about two years worth of practice packed in 4 or 5 months. And my fingers are flying .I am very blessed to have it like that and i try to take advantage of it.I can't think of a better way to help a slow day go by. Then sitting in my crane and getting paid to practice.I wish all of you could do the same.Heck even my bosses are alright with it.Go figure!
