funny strings - Posted - 07/17/2009:  23:40:28

Hi Gang,

i.m.o., it would be useful, to get recommendations for good strings for Squarenecks (Dobros) and hollow necks (Weissenborns).

So please let us all know which strings you do prefer on which type of lapstyle instrument.

I intend to collect these quotings and put them in a kind of list.

OK? So let's start. Thanx to everybody who will contribute something to it - any quotes are appreciated.

Enjoy.

Tomm

Everything sounds good for a start.

I will collect all recommendations and take them in a data base, which will be available to any lapstyle-hero in the end.

It's great fun to work with you guys (and girls, if they want)

Hey, I think this thread is a great idea. At least for us newbies. Great responces so far. Perhaps you all might let know where you get your strings also? I will be looking locally, but if you have an online source I would appreciate it.

I currently have the D'Addario EJ42s on my Paul Beard GoldTone and I like them. I think I prefer the slightly heavier guage Paul Beard Special 29's which I had on previously (.018,.020,.029,.036,.045,.056) which have a slightly mellower sound.

I agree with Tom Jr. Beard Special 29s and D'Addario EJ42s, in that order.

I'm probably an oddball here (I've been called much worse). I've been getting my strings directly from Euphonon Co. Strings - they're a company that packages strings for other companies and sells strings generically as a side business. The price is great, about $2.70/set, and I've found them to be as good as any name brand I've tried. Gauges I'm currently using for squareneck are .017, .018, .027, .035, .045, .056

I like Beard 28s Trying EXP 42s right now and don't like them. They don't seem to hold tune as well as the 28s. I have tried some others but the Beards seem to hold up better.

Here is a thread started by Mike Conner over at ResoNation with 9 pages of posts about strings. I believe he summarized the results in a word doc. as well.

reso-nation.org/forums/whateve...-overview

I use GHS 1650s from AMT. I recently read from Howard Parker's Resoguit List that the .026 in the EJ42 set is actually a .028. Here is the confirmation from D'Addario:

Hi Howard,

Happy New Year to you too.

We changed the spec on the EJ42 set 3 years ago to a .028 3rd string. We
had a lot of old packaging that still said .026, so we have been packing
EJ42 sets with .028 gauge 3rd strings for the last 3 years, even though
the packages said .026. The info has been changed on our website and in
our catalog for a while.

So no it's not a typo, we have changed to the more reliable .028 gauge
in this set.

Cheers,
Peter

The website shows that the EXP42 set also uses a .028 third.

I like EJ 42 also, but on my current axe, Tut Taylor modified I find I get deeper tone up the neck with Scheerhorn cryogenic strings. Buy in quantity and check prices, Elderly, Janet Davis, First Quality, change pricing. Currently ELderly has the best deal on the Scheerhorns.

I like the GHS Sheerhorn TS 1600 Cryogenics. They sound great and seem to last a lot longer than the Beard 29's I was using. Recommend them highly, I get em from Janet Davis, I usually buy 6 packs at the time to save on freight and also stock up on other accessories if I need them. I live in a small town in South West Georgia and the option of popping down to the music store and getting what you need is not available. We have 4-5 music stores, however, they cater to Rock and New Country, very few accoustic instruments and very little accessorites for them to include Thumb picks and finger picks. Janet Davis is a great place to order from.

I'm pretty much a newbie, but Gladgrover turned me on to Duck's Deluxe strings. Bright and longlasting and internet available. My 2cts.
