Dobro 66-S

My first post on reso hangout. Over the last 6 months I've been steadily learning the banjo and fiddle, and want to take a dive into playing reso. I'm looking to purchase my first resonator and am looking for some advice.

My price ceiling is about $1000, and if possible I'd like to get an American made instrument rather than an import.

The following caught my eye on eBay, and I was wondering if anyone has advice regarding the Dobro 66-S. Do others at the hangout own them? How do they compare to similarly priced instruments (new or used)? Would this be a good buy for a starting instrument?

	http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dobro-Square-Neck-Model-66-S-Serial-D-713-7-/320841819516?pt=Guitar&hash=item4ab3a9a57c#ht_500wt_1156

Is there anything that is concerning about the condition of the instrument in the photos provided? Etc etc.

	Cheers,

	-Miles

Does anyone know why our real names have replaced our screen names? And our City and State show.?? I don't want my real name and address to show unless i choose. Way too much BS going on all over the internet and too damn easy for people to use this information. Before we had some privacy that this information was only for members if we so choose.. Please speak up. I changed my profile but we shouldn't have to.

muted tone

Yesterday I put on my blog the issue I was having with my Regal dobro. The better player I become the more I can hear when an expected tone is off. My dobro instructor and I both have noticed that the bass side of my instrument, especially the low G has sounded muted. I installed new strings, checked the cone and spider and took it back to the repair shop where I had my pickup installed. No change in the muted tone. I sent e-mails to Beard (no reply) and read information from Stewart MacDonald (very good information) and still could not find the problem. Took the instrument to another local luthier just minutes from the office and within just a few minutes of hearing the sound Linda London knew what the problem was. It was the size and angle of the slot where the G string sits on the nut. A small file and a few strokes later and my dobro sounds much better. This is another reminder to listen to those repair folk who have 40 plus years of repair experience. No wonder folks from all over send their instruments to London, in Lincoln, NE. Thanks Linda. BRUCE

Who has a new guitar on order? I just saw pictures of Liz Williams' beautiful new Bear Creek hollowneck, and I am curious to know what else is being built. I know there are a few Hooks in the works as well as at least one of Tom's Appalachians.

Stage Sound - getting a good tone on-stage

Hi, y'all. Longtime lurker, rare poster here.

I have an issue that I don't quite know how to deal with. Been playing guitar live for years, both acoustic and electric. I know what I'm doing when it comes to getting a good sound that works with a full band.

Left my regular gig at the first of the year, intent on playing closer to home and (hopefully) playing acoustic (guitar/dobro/mandolin) live. Finally got an opportunity to support a local artist with dobro and mandolin, but I'm not truly set up to get a good amplified dobro sound that will work well with a full band (bass/drums/electric guitar/keys/acoustic guitar) on-stage.

My dobro (Tut) has a Lace Sensor (http://www.amazon.com/Lace-Dobro-Neck-Sensor-Round/dp/B000B470DU) and while it does sound good, it is missing the resonance you get from the cone.

I'd read about using a small diaphragm condensor and the direct signal from the processor, routing through a small mixer and to the board. I have sound gear for that, but I'm worried about using any kind of condensor on stage with a full band. I have a condensor (http://www.guitarcenter.com/MXL-MXL-993-Pencil-Condenser-Microphone-102964434-i1126984.gc) that I could use for this, but I guess the other problem is figuring a way to mount it to to the dobro without doing any permanent damage.

Since it's a full band, I don't think it would be a good idea to have a dynamic on a stand that I step to for solos or embellishment. It's asking for trouble, especially if the band is loud.

If anyone can offer some advice here, I would greatly appreciate it.

	Thanks,

	-j

Beard setup vs Goldtone (florida) setup

I have been reading a lot about the setups on Beard Goldtone Squarenecks. The consensus seems that it is best to have them setup by Beard.

What I don't really understand is why the Goldtone setups are considered to be so inferior - they use all the same parts - cones, spiders, bone nut, bridge - and are both trained by Beard and the instrument has Beard's signature on it.

I am almost 70, have been playing for about a year, and expect to just play with locals for fun. Does anyone think I would really be able to tell the difference? I want to buy a PBSM.

	Thanks

Another Smith and Young Cone Evaluation

I have also been the recipient of Eric Smith’s generous offer to evaluate a Smith and Young cone. The cone arrived well packed and in good condition. The test vehicle was my 2003 Clinesmith squareneck resonator, replacing the original Quarterman cone. No other aspects of the set up changed. I did not change the phosphor bronze strings which had a few hours of play on them. I also took a series of photographs of the guitar, original setup, and both cones. The Smith and Young cone was a direct drop in replacement for the Quarterman.

My initial reaction was that the Smith and Young cone has more volume than the old Quarterman cone and has a somewhat brighter, brassier tone (at least initially) similar to playing a new set of phosphor bronze strings. The Clinesmith with Quarterman cone was not as bright as most maple guitars I’ve played. Bass and mid range response remained good. I’m thinking that at least some of the brightness may be what Mike Witcher referred to as a "green" cone sound. The new cone is very responsive to light picking but has plenty of headroom when you dig in. My intent is to play the Clinesmith with the S&Y cone for a while to let it settle in a bit and redo the comparison with the original Quarterman.

After playing the S&Y cone for a couple hours in the Clinesmith, I have no reservations recommending this cone to anyone as a replacement cone or in a new build.

30's Cyclops info needed.

Hi all, kind of a newbie here but not to the instrument world. Mostly a mando builder ( 1 Dobro build to replace my Scheerhorn, a few Weissenborns & guitars, etc..), but I just scored an old Cyclops & have a few questions. I'll post a video later this eve. It's black & I'm wondering if it was re-colored/ and or if I should consider some sort of re-finish. Did they make any all black ? Pretty sure it's the real deal, has 4- holes in the peak of the cone. Surprisingly heavy as well. I've played a few 30's - 40's Dobros that were considerably lighter. The bigger question would be: there are also 7 divots on either side of the top; something decorative mounted there ? and 4 divots in a diamond pattern with 1 larger divot in the middle of the headstock, which I imagine was for some sort of logo mounting ? Lastly, the spider seems to be sitting on the inside lip of the cone, like it could have been a bit wider to rest upon the outside edge. May just be the original design. If the cone's toast, I'll likely be getting a new spider & cone ( if it's a standard size) . Used the Beard stuff off Stew-Mac a few years back when I finished my dobro build & am very happy with it. Seems Quarterman's are done ( no?) Any new latest greatest spider/cones makes I should be aware of ?

Thanks in advance & I'll get a vid up this eve or tomorrow.

Oh yeah, came from an antique store CL posting simply entitled " Unique Instruments" , half assed pic here :

	http://denver.craigslist.org/msg/2827355330.html

Just goes to show you gotta check out the odball listings ! Won't even say what I stole it for, but the new strings their guitar guy installed were running OVER the coverplate. Stick shoved in where the nut used to be. They told me it was 'home made'.

John Pearse 3000 Nickel Wound strings

Just wanted to comment on the John Pears 3000 Nickel wound strings. I recently bought a pair and was real curious to hear the difference between the nickel wound and the phosphour bronze I'd used in the past. The volume was comparable. What I found interesting and pretty damn cool was the tone of the nickel. Very bright and shimmering tone. They were a bit much the first day but they warmed up after a day or two. It's now been two weeks and they sound amazing. It's my first time using these but as of now, I'll be getting them again. Just my two cents in an awful economy.

Buzzing problem

Last week I had just bought my first square neck dobro off of ebay. The lady assured me that there was no buzzing, but if that was the case I wouldn't be posting. It is a 1976 squareneck dobro. I brought it to a local shop and the guy turned the spider slightly clockwise and that got rid of the one horrible rattling overtone. However now I have a slight buzz on certain strings. When I apply slight downward pressure on the spider it is as quiet as can be. Does anybody have any suggestions? I thought about wedging some foam in between the spider and the cover, but wasn't sure if there was another solution. Any help would be great. Thanks

Raising the Bar Issue

So, in my dobro life, disjointed and fractured as it's been, I have tried a number of bars; Stevens, Shubb, one made by a guy who placed a wooden top on it...can't recall the name, Scheerhorn chrome and Scheerhorn steel, Lap Dawg and now, my newest bar, the EG Smith Bluegrass Bar:

	http://gregboyd.com/accessory_detail.html?accessory_key=504

This was spurred on by some posts made by various people here, including Grizz. When I called and spoke to Greg Boyd (he is friendly and talkative) I was originally looking at the regular Smith bar because I wanted the serrated edges and I didn't realize that the Bluegrass Bar had them from looking at the photo. He explained that it did have the edges and that the bar was smaller than most bars and slightly less high (about 1/8 inch I believe). It was a little lighter as well.

I had some concerns but decided to try it. This is a cool bar, it fits nicely into my hand, almost like an afterthought. My hands are not large but maybe a little wide. This just seems perfect for them. I love the serrated top that keeps my thumb from slipping up. One thing is that full fret coverage is just a hair trickier due to the shorter length. It seems that slants are a little harder to come by too, not that I slant much in my playing.

Mr. Boyd explained the bar is popular with fast bluegrass players who wanted the reduced size and weight for quick position shifts. In that area, it shines. I can definitely feel a speed increase. The sound is somewhere between a Scheerhorn and Lap Dawg. Good sound and I don't notice any string rattle. I was concerned that the lighter weight might bring it out but I can't hear it.

This is easily the most comfortable bar I've ever used. It stays put and balanced and I'm inclined in just two days to award the 'my favorite bar' status to it. Prior to this, I rated the Lap Dawg and Scheerhorn as favorites respectively. I'm having a lot of fun playing with this bar. It feels so much different to me than any other bar I've tried.

Wood body single cone

	Hi All

I'm new to this forum and the world of resonator guitars. After years of fingerpicking on flattops, I 've suddenly got interested in a resonator. I think it's too big a leap to go to a metal bodies I'm thinking of a wood body - possibly a National M2.

I play with bare fingers (and a bit of nail) - any suggestions for models or views on wood body resonators?

	Thanks

HELP Advice Please on OMI Dobro, Roundneck

HELP! I sold my '74 OMI Dobro Roundneck 60D in Blonde some years ago and have been trying to replace it. I get advice to stay away from these 70s-early 80s years as being inferior to other builders/models made today but replacing this beloved guitar is what I jones for.

I'd really appreciate insight into the best OMI years for the 70s-80s and how do I gauge its year of manufacture. What is the best site to reference the headstock numbers against year of manufacture?

I'm all eyes for your comments! If you think I'm wasting $1,000, please let me know.

Feedback on Smith and Young Model 1?

Has anyone had an opportunity to play a Smith and Young Model 1 (steel body) spider cone resonator? I am giving the some thought because they list for $1000 less than the National Style 1 Tricone, and the sound samples posted on the Internet seem pretty good. Have you played one? What did you think of the sound quality, build quality, finish, etc.? I love my Dobro® brass spider cone, and would hope that a National product would sound at least as good, if not better. I'm specifically interested in a square neck so I can switch from bottleneck to lap style playing, and tune to high G without warping the neck on my Dobro®.

Any thoughts on why National chose to rebrand and not make the S&Y instruments part of the National family? Was this a buyout like was to Gibson?

	Thanks!

Wickland or other parlor resonator for fingerstyle?

	Hi,

Like all (?) flattop players I'm fascinated by the many reso sounds out there, and on top of that my wife keeps telling me I "need" one, for fingerstyle and bottleneck. There aren't many dealers in my area (Philadelphia) but the few that I've played (National Estralita, and metal body single cones) seem large and awkward (and, of course, heavy) compared to my OMs.

So then I came across the very appealing video on the Wickland instruments website, showing a guy curled up comfortably with their "German silver parlor guitar" (also a nice dog). So I'm wondering, (a) whether others have opinions of these guitars (b) and how it compares to the National resorocket or tricone cutaway (c) whether there are other small resonators for fingerstyle and bottleneck that I should consider.

There's something appealing about the whole Wickland site, and the prices are not stratospheric, but I assume that buying new from a small shop is more of a risk in terms of resale etc. I can live with that, probably, but I wondered what people think. I'd like to have the same feeling of connection with a resonator that I have with my OMs; I realize they're apples and oranges, but still.

	Thanks,

After a year I'm still a beginner, on my Regal RD-40 Squareneck. But I think it may be time for a 'move-up. I would appreciate comments on the Goldtone PBS, PBS-D and PBS-M models. I've listened to sound bites of all three and can't really tell the difference ( may be my 69 year-old ears). I understand the variation in construction of all 3.

Which one would you suggest, and do you think this is a sensible upgrade? I don't play in a band.

	Many thanks in advance!

	Dave

Some where someone had inserted pieces of cloth under spider legs. Assume to help damp cone or cure a rattle.

Would green felt, adhesive backed, work the same.

I Love Open D Tuning!

So recently I've tuned my Mahogany Meredith down to Open D, and I really am loving it!!! I think it actually sounds better and resonates better in Open D tuning.

I've been listening to a lot of Weissenborn players too lately, and I think it's official, I've gotten bit by the Open D bug!!!

The LOW GROWL!! It's just a whole different sound, and playing technique, and I'm really diggin' it.

I'm having thoughts of Weissenborns, Tricones, Metal Bodied Resos...etc!!!

GREAT STUFF!! Sorry, I just had to share!! :-)

Playing Roundneck w/Std Tuning

Has anyone ever taken a poll to see the ratio of round-neck vs. square-neck players that frequent here?

Looks like I'm a definite minority on the site. I play a resonator like a conventional guitar ("Spanish Style"?), in standard tuning, with a flat-pick or no pick at all.

I just like the sound of a resonator. It gives me something very different from what I normally play, which is electric six-string.

I basically use it instead of a regular acoustic guitar. Texas and Southern blues-based rock sounds pretty interesting played on a resonator. You can strip out the amplification and distortion and get to the root of the music.

I have so much yet to learn about my main instrument, I feel I don't have the time to invest in learning to play "proper Dobro".

Anyone else out there use this interesting instrument like I do? Looks like most of you folks are dedicated to this art form as it relates to bluegrass, folk, and country music, and your skill levels are far beyond mine.

Happy to have this place to visit and the folks I've heard from so far are very helpful and friendly.

	Thanks to all.

Wire a humbucker to a piezo preamp?

I'm making a new slide guitar. Got a piezo system. Got a humbucker. I want to use the bucker for the pickup, and I don't want to buy a set of electronics if I can wire it to the preamp system.

Will it work? Anyone have experience?

Rob Ickes Big Time CD & Tab Book

After hearing and working with Rob at a workshop recently, I purchased his "Big Time" CD and the book that contains all the tablature for the tunes on the album.

As a beginner, most of the licks are above my head, but I have been working on the tune "Ireland, Love of My Heart" and am really enjoying it! The CD is top-notch and quite inspiring...I'd like to work on the Machine Gun Kelly lick soon...

Slants tablature

If you like the demonstration and challenge of slants in the Jim Warren YouTube feature video keep in mind Jim has a fine dedicated website: www.oldtimedobro.com. In addition to some fine videos he has a section of tablature. When you click on the tablature you will see the tab for two old time Oswald numbers with lots of "slants" in the tab. Oswald's Special is in "G" (with slants at 5-7-9 frets) and Tennessee Sweetheart is in "E'". Point your mouse over the tab, click "print" and you have free Slants tablature to practice with. Some folks learn better from tab, than from watching video. Try it---thanks to Jim's efforts, you may get a whole new 'slant' on things. It may look easy, but with timing and getting up speed and blending in the new slants, these 2 songs will be medium difficult.
