Indentify This Dobro

Gentlemen of the Forum,

You assistance please in identifying this Dobro. The general condition and patina would indicate a 1933-37 model. It has the 1896484 patent statement but no serial number.

An unusal feature are the sound hole inserts which appear to be either bone, ivory or possibly cellulose. I have searched hundreds of pictures of Dobros and have never seen anything like them.

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

On Stage Monitor Speakers

Hi,

I'm in a four piece acoustic band playing though microphones (no pickups) into a powered mixer and then into PA speakers. This year we're going to be playing live for the first time to small halls with maybe up to 100 people.

My question is, will we need monitors? If so, any recomendations? Can we get away with good quality domestic hi-fi speakers?

Thanks for any advice

Music Festival Camping Poll

Many music festivals require a full festival ticket for camping and access to the camping area for jamming, etc.. As a result, attendees that can't get week days off either have to buy a full 3 or 4 day ticket for campground access when they're only there two days. Some do not attend for this reason because they don't want to come for just a day, but rather they want to jam with their friends and camp overnight. The thought is that if there were a two day attendance fee that included camping, more could attend the event. What do you think?

Newbie question - nut width

I'm new to resonators (I don't have one yet) and I'm tossing up whether to get a square neck or round neck, and a nut extender for when I want to play on my lap. (I like to play both "regular" slide and lap, can't quite decide the combinations of guitars I want)
I have limited exposure to these instruments - do squarenecks generally have a wider nut? What are the disadvantages of a roundneck with a nut extender? (Other than having it slide off your knee).

Thanks.

The reso has completed it's two day trek from Georgia and is safe and sound here in the house. Per Phil, I won't be able to open it until it acclimates to room temperature. That's OK. At least for now I can sit back and stare at the humi case for awhile. I am going to go do a workout, go to church, then come back home and open it up. I will let you know when I finally open it. Just listen closely about 8:00 CST. You may be able to hear me express my amazement.

the other day i was in my office and my cousin who is around 50 (im 29) he does not play. came in to see what was going on. asked if i had been playing any guitar. and i told him i had just bought a dobro. when i did his eyes lit up. were from oklahoma. and he is originally from wannette oklahoma a couple of hundred miles from where we live now. he told me about how he was freinds with a guy named rudy q jones. and went to high school with mr. jones son. and he would hang around in his shop alot after school. said he was about the best dobro builder in the world back then. im new to the world of dobro's and luthiers so i dont know if this is all true. (if this gentleman was one of the best etc). my cousin moved from there, and had not seen him in years but heard he moved from oklahoma and quit building. my cousin had some good stories about him. and said mr. jones built him some pistol grips for a double barrelled sawed off 12 guage that he still owns.he was wondering what happend to him. so any info i could pass on to my cousin would help thanks.

This is the reso guitar I bought last week. It has good tone and volume. I just put new strings on it and it sounds good to me. It may well be an import--I can't find anything about it on the web. It wasn't until I got it home that I noticed it has a pickup (input in the tailpin). It does have Grover tuners which is a good thing. The only identification on it is MGK on the headstock. Anybody seen one of these before?

Dobro?? Model Identification help

Hello everyone,

Im well versed in vintage electrics, basses, and traditional acoustic guitars - This recently acquired piece is throwing me off a bit, im not sure what I have.

-Mahogany back, sides, and neck.
-Spruce top, 3 ply
-sunburst back, sides, and neck with natural top.
-12 fret neck
-Ebony fingerboard,
-white neck binding
-white body binding with black/natural/black trim- it looks like w/b/n/b from the top - but its is only bound with white and the two black strips are inlaid into the top.
-single cone
-no serial numbers
-no dobro or regal logo
-patent #1896484 stamped on front plate,

That patent was put in place in 1933. The closest model i can come up with is a "45", but the binding, and portholes dont match up.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Need some advice!

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum. I just bought my first resonator guitar today. I've been playing guitar for around 40 years, but I'm strictly a beginner on a resonator. The guitar I bought is used and probably an import. It has MGK on the headstock. Has anyone heard of this? I googled it and couldn't find out a thing. Anyway, I've got to buy a proper slide bar. The lower three strings sound rather dead does that mean I need newer strings or is it the guitar? The strings have probably been on it forever. Any tips/advice would be great! Thanks!

Weissenborn players

Hi,
I would like to ask any of you resophonic players (I am guessing that many of you play bluegrass) that play Weissenborn-type instruments, what tuning do you use?

I'm guessing that the standard Reso G tuning has strings that are too heavy for that type of guitar. Am I right on that? Of course I would not play Bluegrass on a Weissenborn. I was thinking of maybe a C6th or G6th tuning. Let me know what you think.

Thanks

Phil Leadbetter Leaving Grasstowne

I'm not sure if anybody has heard yet, but Phil Leadbetter has announced that he is leaving Grasstowne.[:(] He hasn't gone into any details about any reasons of his departure, but he feels that it was the right time to pursue other interests. Good luck to Phil, one of my personal favorites for sure.

If Grasstowne is looking for a new dobro picker in the meantime, I proudly nominate Justin Moses. I know Justin said he has a lot of session work to catch up on, but with the recent "break-up" of the Dan Tyminski Band, I'm not sure if he has a steady job in the works. Just a thought.[:I][:)]

My Photos in Strictly Country Magazine (Holland)

Hi Folks,

I'm proud to say that some of my photos from the 1972 Country Gentlemen Festival in Webster, Mass., have been published by Rienk Janssen in the beautiful magazine <i>Strictly Country</i> from Holland. The magazine comes back to back with <i>Bluegrass Europe</i>.

Rienk has also given me permission to display excerpts on a web page, so here they are: http://frobbi.org/slides/sc-feb2010
You'll see some caption updates below the photos. Rienk is aware of them. I've also added a link to my Slide Shows page at http://frobbi.org/slideshows.html

Motivated this week by Rienk's adding captions with the musicians' names, I finally started adding captions to the original slide show at http://frobbi.org/slides/cg1972. For their expert help, I want to especially thank Rienk, Fred Bartenstein, Phil Zimmerman, Dick Bowden, Akira Otsuka, and Sab Wanatabe (publisher of <i>MoonShiner</i> magazine from Japan).

This mini-project alone has been an overwhelming thrill for me, working with bluegrass folks literally around the world in just a few days.

I also have to thank my longtime friend Wayne Galella who lent me the professional slide scanner last spring. If it weren't for him, none of this would've happened!

To each his own, but still. go have fun with this guy.

I stopped using EJ42 strings because I didn't like the 26 on the third string. I recently decided to try them again and liked them. I looked at the package and it stated that the third string is 28 although it still has a green anchor ball. I called the company and the man I talked to said it had been a 28 as long as he had been there (5 years). He could not explain why their own website as well as Elderly and Beards say it is a 26. I have no means of measuring it so has anyone ever measured one?? If so what is it?? Thanks in advance! skeeter

Former Banjo Players?

I'm just curious, I've been playing banjo for almost 30 years, semi-professionally, and really love that instrument. I've had an itch to dive into reso for several years. I went to a class at RockyGrass a few years ago but never really caught on because I still have so much to learn on the banjo and it was/is my go to instrument. I ordered a Scheerhorn L after that class. It is spectacular but has been sitting idle since I received it 4 years ago, just diddled on occasionally.

Any other banjo players making the switch or sharing playing time with a reso? I'd be really curious to hear your feelings and experiences of trying to play both instruments well. It'd be nice if I could get proficient enough to play my 'horn in the band on some songs.

Thanks!

archive.org - lots of free live music

Hey all,

I'm mostly over at Banjo Hangout but thought I'd stop by to let you know about a source for live concerts. I've been working with them to help spread the word. It's totally free and a non-profit library organization dedicated to archiving tons of stuff and making it all accessible for free.

http://www.archive.org/details/etree

There's a number of bluegrass and bands with banjo on there and lot of other good stuff too. Here's a list I compiled at a glance but I'm guessing there are some others too:
.357 String Band
Acoustic Syndicate
Arthur Lee Land
Assembly of Dust
Back Forty
Bad Livers
Barefoot Manner
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones
Big Daddy Bluegrass Band
Big Smith
Blue Turtle Seduction
Blueground Undergrass
Borrowed Angels
Brittany Reilly
Broke Mountain Bluegrass Band
Butterjive
Cadillac Sky
Carolina Chocolate Drops
Cast Iron Filter
Chatham County Line
Cindy Woolf
Cornmeal
Cross-eyed Rosie
Danny Barnes
Del McCoury Band
Dirtfoot
Don Reno
Dread Clampitt
Flat Mountain Girls
Girls, Guns and Glory
Green Mountain Grass
Greensky Bluegrass
Hackensaw Boys
Hayseed Dixie
Tony Trishka
Uncle Earl

It's all free and most of it can be downloaded or streamed. If you have recordings you'd like to upload they encourage that too. You would first email them to get a page set up. You have to have have permission to include these as it is a non-commercial, trade-friendly site.

Also, Deadheads love it…over 7,000 concerts on line!

There's lots of other great stuff on the site too. Check out the movies and the Wayback Machine.

If you enjoy it you can add a link to your sites or blogs.
There is also a blog at: http://internetarchive.wordpress.com/

history of the song, "End of the World"

Just curious --
<ul><li>Who wrote it?</li>
<li>About when was it written? </li>
<li>Was it originally written with lyrics, or were lyrics ever added later? </li></ul>
I'm familiar mostly with the versions on Oswald's recording, "Brother Oswald" (Rounder CD 0013) and "The Great Dobro Sessions," and haven't been able to find out much online about the song's history. I did learn that Red Foley had a hit with a song of the same name, way back when. Is Foley's "EOTW" one & the same as the "EOTW" that Os is so well known for?

Thanks in advance for any information!

Need Help Identifying an Old Reso

I just picked up an old resonator guitar. The name on the headstock is only a partial. It's in red lettering and says: ARTIS.... something. I think it might read ARTISTIC, but I'm not sure. The name is on a scroll with fancy laurel type stuff in the shape of a U underneath the name and an X at the bottom. It appears to be made from mahogany with a natural sunburst top. It's really old; they guy who sold it to me said it was made somewhere between 1932 and 1938. The f holes are not standard shapes but are a modified version; more like S holes with dots at the top right and bottom left. It has no other resonators except the big center one which does not appear to be a cone but rather a metal plate over the top of the guitar (I can see the wood underneath). It has 18 frets, neck mounted to the body at the 12th fret, and the back of the neck is rounded with a hint of a V shape. I haven't yet taken this one apart but I'll need to fix two cracks in the top and replace the frets. Thanks in advance!

Wintergrass??

Sooooo..... i just got my plane ticket earlier today, which means i will for sure be hanging out at Wintergrass! The Rayco boys will be there, so thats where i will be spending most of my time. The lineup is absolutely incredible. Stringdusters, and the Wilders seem to be the only bands (that i know of) representing the Reso world, but rest assured there will be plenty of slidey action at the Rayco booth. When i was there in '07 it was a most incredible weekend resophonically speaking. Im sure that '10 will not disappoint.

Oh and Rayco should have #200 up there, for those who really want to know what has me so excited that i could probably pee my pants at any moment.

here is the link http://www.acousticsound.org/index.shtml note the first image that pops up.....

I just got on the forum and about had a heart attack when I saw my name as the winner of the drawing. Man, I am getting too old for this! I can't wait to get it. I am not usually the recipient of such an honor. Phil, thank you so much for donating it and I promise to make you proud. I recently joined a new country / bluegrass band so the timing is right for a new guitar. God is good!

Thanks again!

Newbie Howdy

Howdy everyone. I've just started playing dobro about a month ago. I borrowed my brothers dobro (I call it my bro-bro [8D]). I have been watching a lot of videos and trying to pick up some licks/tricks and I have taught myself 3-4 songs now. I learned most of Oswald's dobro chimes (Somebody elses version on youtube). I am still trying to get more fluent on these songs, smoother slides, transitions, right notes right time, etc. Anyway. After playing my bro. bro. for about a month, I decided to buy one. I went to several music stores and played different ones. Regals, Morrells, Gibson hounddogs, a Custom madeI (sounded great), looked online. I finally talked myself (and my wife) into buying a dobro brand dobro. I kept telling myself for a couple of hundred more dollars, I can get a dobro brand. Well, It came Thursday. A 1983 model. It must have had 20 years of grime on it. I think I got it all cleaned off now. New EJ42 strings. It sounds good (to me).

<b>I hope I can find to time to get at least competent on it.</b>

HELLO AND QUESTION

HI, THIS IS MY FIRST POST. BEEN LURKING FOR A WHILE READING VARIOUS THINGS. LIKE THE SITE. HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU GUYS. LOOKING AT BUYING MY FIRST RESO. THIS IS GOING TO BE JUST A INTRO GUITAR SO I'VE LIMITED MY CHOICES, BUT COULD USE A HAND WITH THE FINAL DECISION. MY CHOICES ARE EITHER THE CHINA DOBRO HOUND DOG (NON DELUXE MODEL) AND A REGAL RD-30. THESE ARE THE TWO I NEED TO DECIDE BETWEEN. NOT LOOKING FOR INFO ON OTHER MODELS, JUST THESE. I KNOW THEY BOTH WILL NEED SETUP, BUT THATS SOMETHING I AM ALSO GOING TO BE DOING MYSELF. ANY INSIGHT BETWEEN THE TWO WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. BY THE WAY, BOTH ARE GOING TO BE ROUND NECKS. THANKS IN ADVANCE.

machining a custom slide?

I'm thinking of machining my own slide and designing it to perfectly fit my hand,
the stevens slide i currently have is hard to keep hold of. also hard to hit a note
in between two open strings with it.im new to dobro maybee its just me, but seems
if there was some relief on the tip of the slide it would be easier to get into those
tight places.again im new to this and im sure this has already been done, but it would
be nice to have a custom slide. thinking stainless steel? and fuller radi on the sides?

what do yall think?

Curious (Weiss) Newbie...

Hi Everyone,

I am new to the forum and to Reso in general. I have as you might know from recent post I am looking for my first squareneck Reso....

I have ran across the Weiss (Weissenborn) style of instrument.

I am curious to learn more about this instrument. Off to more research......

Another newbie....

Well, I am just starting my Reso adventure. I do play some fiddle, mandolin, guitar -just shade tree mind you and simply for fun and de-stressing from the daily grind.

I am just starting my research for an entry level SQ neck Reso. I have been looking at various threads here, YouTube, etc, etc....

Been thinking along the $200 - $500 range for some reason (Regal, Johnson, Recording King and such) --used mainly. Seems like to a newbie a lot sound very similar but a good setup will send a beginner level Reso into the intermittent level regions -maybe it's the newbie in me thinking this.

Steve Smith has recently gotten my attention with his Red Line brand with his customer service!

So, I am looking for food for thought from those who have gone before me....

Thanks so much.

Anyone know of any Knoxville area instructors for reso? I am a long time banjo picker who would like to learn reso. I am a self taught picker but would like someone to help me start "right" on reso. Once I have the basics I can usually go on from there. Thanks....Randy...Kingston, TN.
