Bottleneck BLUEGRASS/COUNTRY slide: songs and lessons

	Hey folks,

as I couldn't manage to get a squareneck up to now, I put my roundneck Tricone out of the box again. There's lots and lots of blues lessons out there, but I want to play bluegrass and country - like, for example Gil Landry of the Old Crow Medicine Show (or Critter Fuqua in the earlier days). Check out

	http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12N_iD1lC7k

	or

	http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKPxQ1TNm6A

Are there any lessons for bottleneck players out there? I'm gonna get me a squareneck asap, but till then...

	thanks!!!!!

Is the a cure for GAS ( My new Meredith is home)

I started fooling around with resonators two months ago and GAS got me enough that I called Tooter Meredith and bought a bubble quilt maple he was working on. I picked it up at his shop yesterday and WOW it is great. I was so excited upon seeing it I purchased a rosewood spruce he is working on and will have ready in a month. I need some kind of medicine to cure GAS. (I have had MAS for 6 years and I guess this has cured it). I will try to attach a couple of pictures, Now if I can just learn to play them.

Authenticate National Style N?

	Hi. I'm new. Two questions:

	1. How can I authenticate a 1997 National Style N, SN# N-54, i just purchased over eBay? There appears to be some issues with the saddle and looking at the guitar closely, it appears to be different in construction to the few Nationals I've seen in person. I wonder...

	2. Can anyone recommend a good reso repair shop in the Washington DC/Baltimore metro area?

	Thanks in advance.

	Paul

Duct tape? Super glue? I don't have this problem with acoustic guitar or 5 string banjo.....

Just got back from seeing Michael Messer (and Ed Genis) - great gig. The lap tricone hawaiian / country songs were almost the highlight - that being his blue M32 dobro (there is a story with it). I had a brief pick on it after the show - gotta love the M32. TT

unidentified res guitar

I got this thing about 30 years ago and never used it. I was wondering if anyone knows what brand and model this is. there is no label on it anywhere not even inside. Someone installed a bridge transducer on it. The only marking is a patent # on the res. 1896484

This is some kinda low end model for sure.

OMI Dobro Serial Number?

I picked up what I believe is an OMI Dobro

The serial number does not match any of the formats I have found on the internet.

It also came with a Dobro hard-shell case. I don't believe it is a counterfeit, but you never know. Why someone would counterfeit a relatively inexpensive guitar is beyond me.

	Anyhow, the S/N is D9 120759

Can anyone help identify it? It is a wood body, 12-fret, f-sound holes, spider bridge, solid headstock with Grover tuners

	Thanks folks.

Ukelele + Dobro + Beatles

Here's an odd little sidetrack- My friend Casey MacGill and I recently contributed a song to a website having the stated mission of playing every song in the Beatles catalog with ukulele included in each song. The song we were assigned was I Feel Fine. Casey sings lead and plays uke and cornet, Matt Weiner plays bass, I play everything else and recorded and mixed the track. I tried to cop the original guitar solo on dobro and used some dobrolic noises to approximate the feedback intro. It was fun to do and there are some other cool tunes on the site too (check out Gerald Ross' solo uke version of Penny Lane). Here 'tis...

REPLICA 66 - Can anybody help?

I am desperately looking for some detailed pics of the Replica 66 Dobros and the headstock logo that were made by the Dopyeras (logically in 1966).

They were sort of experimental 12 fret Dobros, made substantially of fibreglass - certainly with black or white plastic coverplates and maybe plastic fingerboards. The fan patterns on the coverplates were also reversed ( fans facing out rather than in)

	Can anyone help?

Hi all... I know that Josh played "Bury Me Beneath the Willow Tree"... I believe, with Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper. There used to be a version of it on youtube, but it's gone I've listened to many contemporary versions of it, & I already have tablature & a track from Jay Buckeys site, but I'm also teaching myself how to read music, & so I don't understand all the notation right now. I'd really like to hear an old school bluegrass, version where you can hear the resonator guitar. I also have The Carter family doing it to, but that doesn't help me either. If I at least knew which record it was on (LP or 45 EP), I could buy it. Thanks so much!

Nashville Number System

Hello all. I have been a bluegrass musician for about 14 years now. In my experience I have never had a need for the Nashville number system, and as such never learned to use it. In my attempts to become a better musician I have decided the Nashville number system is something that would be very useful. How many people here know how to use this, and actually use it? It seems pretty simple, and most musician have likely used it mentally. My main goal is to quickly recall each note in odd chords (or any chords actually), and apply them in whichever key I am playing. I have searched Google and found modest amounts of information, mostly just covering the concept. To those that know and use this system... how did you memorize the number for each note in each key? I'm personally not good at memorizing things like that without using it daily. Would anybody recommend a book? I would hate to spend $50 on a book and get the same thing I can find online for free, but at the same time any useful knowledge is worth something. Thanks.

New member looking for help

I have been playing guitar for 50 years. Playing solo gigs for the last 7 years as singer songwriter storyteller. Played for 20 years until 1996 and just quit. Three months ago I fought the saw and the saw won. Lost tip of thumb, half index finger, long finger is in place but will never work, ring finger bends only half way, tip of little finger gone. Left hand. I am right handed. Now the real problem. Need advice.

Tried going lefty and can chord ok but cannot hold a pick#$@%^.

Dobro sounds like the thing. Before investing in a axe I have setup a old yamaha guitar with a extension nut and made a tall saddle. I have been using a brass finger-slide on my pinky and it sounds good. I have been playing alt tuning for years and that is a plus. Using open d (dadf#ad) now.

I want to pick up a res but am not sure how much to spend for a first time axe.

Any advice about what to look for, price, and such.

Got a shueb gs? With the wood attached but no index finger to hold it. Put velcro in the slide and attached a pvc fitting to it that slips over my stub and this is working ok for now until I get more movement back in my hand.

Thanks for any advice. I need to get back to giging.

	Thanks, bluduc

I've always loved coming up with new instrument concepts and doing my best to tinker my way to success in making it happen, but there's just something about including the bottom of a Folgers can that put me over the top of the point of no return! I have been hearing reso's my whole life, and playing music that was conducive to their presence, but never gave them my full attention until almost a year ago. I had the privilege to set up a meeting with Jerry Douglas, in which I was going to give him a couple of my Sipsey River Steel guitars for him to test drive for me. He chose Soundcheck Studios/Nashville for our rendezvous point. When He showed up, he helped me carry all my gear into the Fender studio room, which consisted of 2 laps, the Hog, (which is a giant, carved top and back lap steel with guitar and bass strings) my fretless bass and one or two others. When we got settled in the studio, he introduced me to the guys from Fender, as well as another player he had invited who just so happened to be Andy Hall. We had a great time, and both Jerry and Andy ripped on the SRS's. I even got to see Jerry make some signature presets for the new Mustang 2 amp, using MY Hollow body electric, SRS guitar!! We spent over 2 hours talking, laughing and playing. Cloud nine wasn't lofty enough to afford me a ride after that meeting!

Anyway, from that point on, I was hooked, and I determined I was going to come up with a resonator version of my SRS. I started paying a lot more attention to the unique sound and voicing of reso's. I have always been an out of the box kinda guy, and just have to say "sorry" to you purest's out there, (which by the way, I find totally ok). It's just not me. By the way, what's to say that the crazy stuff now isn'g going to be the purest's fuel for the future? Anyway, I got busy for a while with building my SRS's, as well as family things and had left the thought of building a reso version on the shelf for a while until recently, when I got a call from the Hangout's very own KodiakReso about one of my guitars. He was going to drive within 10 minutes of my house on his way from Alaska to Florida, and asked if he could stop by and check out my stuff. Well, he bought one of my SRS's, and showed me some of his reso's before heading to Florida. That meeting re-kindled my desire to build a reso. (I've since bought one of his from him)

I have finally finished my reso-knee prototype, and after relentless tinkering, am pretty danged happy with it. The cone is actually conductive (not aluminum, but the bottom out of folgers can which I hammered and spun!!) and has an active EMG magnetic pickup about a hairs thickness under the cone to pick up the cone itself, not the strings. It is also loaded with k&k pure mini's to pick up the body resonance. I'll be posting a mp3 or two as well as pics on my profile page of RH, before ultimately heading to Nashville to unload this crazy prototype to none other than Andy Hall. He will make it RIP! (and I don't mean rest in peace)!! What is the old cliche',,,,, The best part of waking up is Folgers in your............... guitar?? Stay tuned for more Franen-reso experiments!

First time to play in public in 10 years!

Wow, what a hoot I had last night. I played with the local old time fiddlers association at our senior center and it was great. A packed house and they wanted to listen to us. I was the only dobro there so somewhat of an attraction to say the least. Once upon a time I was a semi-pro guitar/bass player and have missed that like crazy lately. Right now I don't care if I am playing for a kindergarten class as long as I am playing somewhere for somebody. Not a paying gig you say, I don't know about that. I got a million dollars worth of fun out of it.

Get out have some fun and make a senior happy, it just might be me!

	Thanks - Phil

Dobro bass info.

A fellow emailed me and asked me about info on his Dobro bass as follows.

I saw your website and thought maybe you could help a little.

	I own a Dobro resonator bass guitar serial number W9 862 94D.

Having difficulty finding out where it comes from and when. Probably 94 is the year and D is apparently wood, but what are the other numbers?

	Sincerely,

	John Ellis

	  And I replied

Hi John, I don’t know for sure, but the 3 numbers in the center would mean it was the 862nd one made that year. I believe you’re correct

about the year of manufacture. “W” could mean Bass. The “9” your guess is as good as mine. Jim

		Anyone have any other ideas???

spider or biscuit for mic'ing?

	Hi,

I'm playing a show tonight and I was wondering whether it would be easier to amplify via microphone a spider reso or a biscuit reso. I've got a mahogany body spider and a brass body biscuit. I've never had super luck with either, and I was thinking that the differences in attack, sustain and volume must make some difference. The brass biscuit is much louder, attacks faster and decays faster. Any insights are appreciated. Thanks!

Need Help Identifying This Round Neck Reso

A local customer stopped by the shop the other day and dropped off this round neck reso. guitar for me to sell for her. My first guess was that it was a National brand guitar. I took it to a festival last weekend. One person there told me that it was likely to be a model that was sold through Sears, due to the "Z" on the serial number, and the curvature at the top of the peghead.

I am also trying to establish a fair price to ask for it. if you have any good advice, I'd love to hear it.

Here's a link to the pictures here on my RH page...

GBDGBD tuning on a lap steel?

I hope some of you guys on here that also play lap steel can answer a few questions for me....

I'm looking to get a six string lap steel to practice my reso quietly at night. The ones I've looked at come with strings for a C6 or E6 tuning. I guess these gauges wouldn't tune up right for a GBDGBD tuning. Do I need to buy strings suited for that tuning? If so, can I just buy a set of strings like I put on my reso or do they not suit a lap steel?

One more question......What is the advantage of playing in a C6 or E6 tuning? It looks like you'd have to relearn all your runs. Just curious.

New guy on the forum

Just wanted to say howdy and thanks for all the great info and tabs I have found here. I am a long time guitar player who lost most of the mobility in my left hand due to injuries and surgeries. I still play a little Scruggs style banjo, pedal steel and now have added a Wechter-Scheerhorn 6524R to the arsenal.

I miss gigging but at least I can still entertain myself somewhat. If you are ever in Oak Harbor, WA on the first saturday of the month we have an acoustic jam going at Click Music. No one is great but the fun is superb.

	Thanks - Phil
