Thoughts on Instruction materials?

I've recently posted my new Reso/Lap G tuning Theory and Number system course over in "for sale". Having taught for 25 years, I've watched many courses and methods appear, and I'm trying to address what seems to be a missing element in most courses, which is approaching learning and development from the standpoint of music theory as the unifying element of any style, as well as playing by ear and understanding any tuning.

Many players seem to have an aversion to 'theory" as I did when starting out, but without doubt it's the shortcut to development and self-expression.

I've had nothing but great repsonses to my similar courses for Pedal Steel (more here: http://www.markvanallen.com/store_books.html) and I'm hoping I'm providing some positive help to seekers after improvement.

I'd really love to hear about your experiences with instructional material, likes and dislikes, and your perspectives on the role theory (and viewing reso from a theoretical point of view) has on your growth as a player. Big thanks, MvA

FS: 1933 National Style N (3-Piece German Silver Body) - Rare

Up for sale is a National Style N single cone resonator guitar. This was the top of the line singe cone National back in the early 1930s. This one has tricone like construction with its 3-piece German silver body (which makes it even more desirable than the 2-pieced stamped body). It is in really nice, but not perfect shape. It was recently restored by Marc Schoenberger, including a new ebony fretboard and a full neck reset, so it plays like a dream. Other than the fretboard, it is totally original. Keeping this from being a $10,000 instrument is a name scratched into the back of the headstock (see pics) and two small areas where it looks like tiny dents were straightened back out (these areas look good, but they aren't perfect -- again, see the pics). If you know Nationals, you will know that these are ultra-rare. This one is fun because it is very collectible and it plays and sounds like a dream. This guitar went for $6999 a few years back on the Vintage Nationals site www.nationalguitar.com. With this economy, I'm willing to go around $5500 in cash, trade or a combination of both. I'm open to anything. Right now, I would probably be most interested in nice Fender and/or Gibson electrics. I'll ship this one in a National Resophonic hardshell case that will properly protect the instrument. If you're interested, contact me and I can send additional pictures and/or discuss on the telephone.

Photos can be seen here: http://s276.photobucket.com/albums/kk12/mikejhartman/Style%20N/

The Bobby Wolfe that hit the Classifieds yesterday has me salivating... sure is a nice-looking instrument and if it sounds as good as it looks!!! Just missed one in August and the temptation to raid the "dividend check jar" from the 401K is really heating up!!!

Harlow

My friend's Harlow is still for sale. You won't find a better jumbo walnut anywhere. Many top players choose Harlow http://www.harlowresonatorguitars.com/Harlow/Endorsements.html including the late, great Gene Wooten.

The only reason this guitar is for sale is that the owner bought a new one with a different sound-well design. This guitar is owned by a hobby picker. It has never been played outside or in a club, so it has only been played gently in a non-smoking environment.

Dobrato, Resophonic Vibrato Modification

	Hello Folks,

I wanted to introduce some of you to a modification I'm currently installing on round neck resophonic instruments. You can get various tonal variations, really fun with fingerstyle and fingerstyle blues. I'll be happy to explain the build, you can also check them out on my website, castlecreekguitars.com. I built my first prototype about 3 years ago on a Regal round neck, now I'm doing the modification on Nationals, Regal's, Republic's and hope to add more soon.

	Thanks for taking a look.

	Hi everyone,

I just joined the RHO today, I've been a member of the Banjo Hangout for a number of years but I do dabble with the dobro. I'm looking for a good steal on a set of period tuners (butter bean type) for my 1991 d-60 slotted headstock model dobro. Just wondering if anyone might have a set laying around their not using.

	Thanks,

Just as I was clicking into E-bay a while ago, there was a nice looking Harlow Spruce/Koa auction closing. It went before I could get signed in, with only one bidder at $1000 ! someone got a real deal on that one!

Anyone notice the BRW/Spruce Fishook listed at Elderly for $4500? Not a bad deal considering where JD's pricing is headed on those. Wish I lived closer so I could swing by and play it a while.

Old National (?) Round Neck Reso For Sale

A customer stopped by the shop a while back and asked me if I could sell this for her. It belonged to her father, who has passed, she has some medical issues, and has no need for the guitar, and so it is for sale.

I don't know a lot about these older guitars. I took it to a festival last month in Springfield, IL, and a lot of people gave me their opinions on it. The most favored guess was that it was made by National, and was sold through Sears. I don't know how old it is, but there is a serial number on the peghead, that starts with the letter "Z".

The guitar is in nearly playable condition. There is a bit of binding missing from one side of the fretboard, and there is a very repairable crack on one side of the lower bout. The strings are very old. It looks like this guitar has not been played in some time. It could currently be used for bottle-neck style playing, perhaps, but it looks to me like it could use a neck reset, as the action gets pretty high as you migrate up the neck.

The guitar came without a case, but I can throw in a gig bag with it.

	Price: $850 or best offer.

You can see a picture of the guitar here: http://redlineresophonics.com/ Scroll down to the 10th instrument in the line-up, and there it is.

Reply to this message or PM me here if you are interested.

F/S: 1930 National Triolian, 12-fret, $3200

National Triolian Model Resophonic Guitar, c. 1930, made in Los Angeles, California; polychrome enamel finish with stenciling, steel body, maple neck.

A good-playing early 1930's Polychrome Triolian. Early features include "Patent Applied" on headstock, coverplate with no ribs, painted maple neck and fingerboard. Dark mustard yellow/green body finish, brighter yellow coverplate with orange accents and Hawaiian scene on back. Well-suited to either finger or slide playing.

Overall length is 38.5", 14.25" wide at lower bout, and 3.25" deep. Scale length is 25".

Excellent playing condition with average finish wear, just enough to look really cool! Typical chipping play-wear to coverplate and edges, painted fingerboard shows wear down its length. Neck has been reset (excellent job). Cone, biscuit and tuners are replaced, otherwise appears original. Sounds very good, deeper and less harsh than many steel bodied Nationals. Very Good Condition. Includes non-original hardshell case.

I'm happy to provide more pics on request or references for anyone interested.

I've got my Gibson DM33 up for sale in the Classifieds section. When my doctor told me yesterday that I have lost 14 pounds of grip strength in my left hand over the last three months, my decision to keep playing or retire was made for me. I'll be adding an American Standard Strat and a couple of great amplifiers to the Classifieds in the next day or so. If I don't get any activity here, I'll probably go the eBay route in January.

On E-bay, an Adams reso for a BIN of $685. Thing is, the ad copy says its a solid walnut Pro model, but I swear the back and sides looks like Cherry, and the top almost like mahogany. Gold plated hardware, inlayed fret markers. This is a great deal, even if it's a laminated model. I've never heard an Adams guitar, but heck, for the price of a laminated import how could you go wrong! Someone buy this to keep me from it! Please!
