Hey folks,

Here's a lesson on John Reischman's tune The North Shore. We all love Salt Spring, but imo pretty much all John Reischman tunes should be standards.

Apart from just being a beautiful melody that translates well to dobro, The North Shore is a great teaching tool for dynamics and expression. We’ll employ several left and right hand techniques and ideas: thumb rakes, chord tones, bar control, vibrato, etc. in this lesson.

Winder Slide - Dobro Lesson

Here's a pretty old-time tune, Winder Slide, that works out pretty well on the resophonic. I first heard it from Rayna Gellert's excellent album "Ways of the World", a desert island old-time fiddle album for sure.

Billy in the Lowground - Dobro Lesson

Hey folks,

Here's an arrangement of an old-time fiddle version of Billy in the Lowground. It's related to but different from the standard bluegrass version we're likely familiar with. Over on patreon.com/mileszurawell I've been creating arrangements for bluegrass-adjacent tunes and posting lessons on them.

The video lessons are 15-20 minutes long with explanations of techniques employed and my choices as far as the melody is concerned. Tabs and mp3 practice tracks are also included.

Here’s a fun(ny) one: Three of us made a tongue-in-cheek track as part of a contest for a local celebrity lawyer. (You know, with billboards plastered everywhere and a zippy motto...) There’s a movie being made about him, and they were holding a song contest.

Lo and behold, the movie production company optioned our song and it will (evidently) be featured in the upcoming movie soundtrack.

It's meant to be loose and whimsical and we (I) played it that way.

As a long time banjo picker it’s easy to get started on the dobro. Upper 4 strings tuned the same and most of the RH technique carries over well. A month and a half in and I’m enjoying the ride.

I’m mostly working on fiddle tunes at this time to get better at melody and melodic playing. I would appreciate some quality feedback.
