I believe there to be a scam going on. I have a classified for a Reso and was contacted by someone who only identified himself as "Smith". The e-mail is in somewhat broken English. He wants to pay by check and have "his shipping company" pick it up. (un-named) and asked for my name, address, telephone number. Tread carefully. I told him PayPal only and unless i know you. And I will only ship to a verified address. Safety first people.

Mike

It actually came through Flatpicked Hangout. E-bay for a while years back was inundated with these scams. They still are but I don't think quite as bad. Most wised up real quick. Unfortunately for some, they got burned. I had some high end guitars up for sale and received actually quite a few from BFE wanting to send money orders etc.etc. even offering me more than the listed price. Money orders have gotten so bad the banks hold them. IMO the only way to be safe with someone you are not familiar with is to require PayPal. I am sure I will not hear from him again. Just wanted to pass this along. They say buyer beware well that goes for the seller too. Please be careful.

I also got an e-mail from "Smith" last night. It looked just like the e-mail I got from a "Grace Perkins" late last year, so thankfully, I knew what to look for. It's a good thing we have guys like Mike on the board to spread the good word about the bad guys, but we all have to keep an eye out to keep from getting hit.

I got the same one. I also got one a couple of weeks ago from another scammer. I usually have fun with them and waste their time for a week or so and then stop corresponding. The more questions I ask them the more frustrated they get. As long as I don't give them any contact info they stay interested, and it only takes a minute or so to get some good entertainment. It might be fun to get everyone doing it. I ask them questions like "Do you want the amp with the guitar?" when there clearly isn't one. When they say yes I tell them "Too late, I just sold it".

Hey Dan, I never really thought of messing with them. Now THAT is right up my alley.

Brent, thanks for the compliment. Those of us that have sold things before and been approached became aware of these mostly from the people who unfortunately got burned. I am more concerned for the people who have not had a lot, if any, experience selling. A lot of these guys as you know will make offers that seem "too good to be true" and you certainly know what they say about that. Vigilance and caution are the words of the day.

Grizz, He does have lots of money, he scammed it from people who did not know, you also get these from ebay, they want the movers to pick it up, they pay more than you ask and they want you to send them a refund.

One of my playing buddies had something similar happen to him about 4-5 months ago and that person gave up after my friend told him that he wanted the same info from the buyer about address etc. and the guy never got back to him.

It's pretty much become a 'fact of life' that if you sell a lot of used music equipment online you'll eventually come in contact with one (or several) of these scammers. Unfortunately, I've known some good hard-working musicians who've been badly burned. I really don't understand how these parasites can stand to look at themselves in the mirror!

Mike......those dudes have been lurking here for a while. I had my B & B on here for sale and had the same thing. Me and another fellow in NC, dealing with the same creep, got the FBI looking and was told the folks were somewhere in Romaina and most likely couldn't be tracked. They said it's sort of a national passtime.

Life on the internet.

"britty" contacted me about my D-16, too. Smelled bad in the first email, but didn't mention the shipping thing until the 2nd email (my reply was pretty much retelling what the ad sez).

What I don't get is how they rip people off. I know I'd tell 'em to piss off if they asked for any kind of refund...
