Howdy.. Yaaa... about a year ago....I advertised my T8 Fender. Grace Perkins contacted me and after 10 or so E mails...here comes a check for double the amount I was asking for the guitar.. Same story as above.. "their rep sill pick up the guitar etc etc... The check arrived UPS.. I E mailed "GRACE" and aked whats up... She said cash the check and send the difference to ??? another name in a different country. The check was drawn on the North Community college in Seattle Wa. I took the check to my banker.. who called the Community college. Yep your right... the check was NOT ISSUED from the college. I E mailed :GRACE:' and told her to send me a check VIA US MAIL. This they will not do as the US GOVERMENT would go after them for mail fraud. THIS THREAD SHOULD BE PLACED FORMOST ON THIS SITE. to warn any Reso Hangout member. leegee |

Over at the Banjo Hangout there were a lot of scam contacts being made on items listed for sale, at one time. You learn that the improper grammar, along with the vague phrases, such as "item" instead of specific "guitar" etc. is a big clue. Also if a member has just joined the Hangout and is buying or selling, caution is warranted. I always try to deal with people who have been a member for a little while, at least. |

Hi - I'm new here and have something for sale on the classified board. I have to say that I get one of these cahsier's check phishing scams every time I list something for sale on craigslist or any of the guitar or photography discussion boards I post to. It's hard to believe people still fall for it! Nice of you all to look out for each other.

For a while I was selling off some tools and equipment I no longer needed when I closed up my shop. Almost every time I put an ad in Craigslist, or ebay, I got a similar response, often from several different cons. They must stay awake nights thinking of ways to seperate the public from their stuff, and their money.
At first I may have gone along with one or two if they could put a sentence together that made good sense. That's what made me realize something funny was going on the first time.

Yeah Mike, sounds like a lot of BS to go through just for a Ford truck starter. Wonder what his game is ??

otdobro,
It ain't about the Ford truck starter, It's about the balance you send back to them. They don't care if they get the item or not. After you cash their check and send them the difference, a week or so later your bank will notify you that their Bank Check is NG. That's it.

So what you're saying is that he intends to send me more than the asking price ??

He will, in most cases send you a Bank check for about double your asking price, tell you to cash it, even let it clear your bank before sending him a refund for the difference. What most people don't realize is that it may take longer to clear than the bank tells you, ten days or longer. I think it takes a while longer for the banking system to realize the check is actually no good and isn't going to clear.
