I have to take the chores in short spurts in this heat. I can't take that "beat the snot outta ya hot sun". Sometimes I duck into my tool shed for a breather,... sometimes I head for the cellar of the house where my wood shop is. Either way,... there is just NOTHING like an ice cold Coke.... I get a glass of crushed ice and pour coke over it........man does that hit the spot.
I gave up drinking Cokes, though a Mexican Coke (real cane sugar) can be very enticing.
I don't drink much alcohol or beer, but when I do, a good porter or stout is the way I go. Of course gin and tonics are always good this time of year, but it has to be Tangueray and Canada Dry is the only way to fly... sorry Shifty.
Dean, you better be careful with those IPA's, you don't want to put a bar ding in that BEAUTIFUL new Brazilian Hook!
Well,.... I won't have anything alcoholic until after chores,....or chores won't get done. Working with farm equipment means that if you don't keep your wits about you,... you get a name like,...Lefty,... or Stumpy. If we are talking Barley soup,.... I like the Founders "Dirty B@st@rd",... or Stones "Arrogant B@st@ard

There's roosters laying chickens and chickens layin' eggs
Farm machinery eating people's arms and legs
I wasn't hurtin' nobody
I wasn't hurtin' no one
Seems like almost every year someone in Huron County is killed by farm machinery. I don't think those not exposed to it realize just how dangerous it can be.
BTW I never commented on the thread because it was Coke and you know how Pepsi and Coke fans feel I was a huge Pepsi fan but those days are gone now. Another really good hot weather drink is Vernors. For me now it is juice in moderation or water. I was also a big fan of PBR. What'll ya have? hehehe
Great thread, I recall some of my best days as a kid drinking a bunch of Faygo, out on the big lake, Erie. Those were some HOT days out by West Sister. Now just the other day, a friend and I were sitting in the shade and cracked some cold ones. We agreed, if ya got some shade and a cold one in your hand, there is no temp that you cannot deal with. My choice, as a big kid, summer or winter, Labbatt Blue...
We have one of the old Bob-lo boat Captains living here by us. Mama Bear talks to him all the time. Remember Captain Bob-lo, one blue eye and one brown. He was off the hook..Spent a LOT of time at Bob-lo and even enjoyed just going on the "Moonlight Cruise" What a party. I miss them. When i had my Cruiser on Lake St Clair we used to go there, about a 3.5 hour cruise and just sleep on the boat and spend the weekend. They had a nice marina there. Also used to take trips to Catawba Island off Point Pelee. I downloaded that video off YouTube. Faygo and Vernor/s are born in Detroit products. As a young'un I lived less than a half a mile from the original Vernor's plant at the foot of Woodward and my old man would walk while I rode my tricycle there. Ah the memories of a better time.

I do get into to some Cokes as well, nothing goes better with the rum!! Some folks would not think of MI. as a maritime state but the way rum and boats go, well.... Kraken rum with Coke has been a mainstay in this wheelhouse for over a year...

Dang! Where I'm from (close to Grizz), moms use Vernor's to fix belly aches and such... "Mommy, my belly hurts.." "Well drink a glass of Vernor's and see if that helps..." LOL... We consult Vernor's before anything else i.e. doctors.. LOL!
The ultimate drink for me with Vernor's was the Boston Cooler. I have been hooked on them for almost 60 years. hehehe Vernor's is a staple in our house as Mama Bear has intestinal problems and drinks it daily. It is the Ginger that helps. In the winter during cold and flu season we used to make "hot tottie's" which is Vernor's, Lemon Juice, Rum, and Cloves. I don't know how much it helps your cold but your sure feel no pain after a few of them. I also used to get a fifth of Ginger flavored brandy, drink it and put on half a dozen covers. Sweats the cold right out of you and you sleep like the proverbial log.
BTW for folks that don't know, Michigan has the longest freshwater coastline in the US and the second longest coast line in the US next to Alaska and more boats registered than any other state in the Union. It also boasts the highest amount of fresh water navigable waterways in the country. Fact: In Michigan, you are never more than 6 miles from a body of water and 85 miles from one of the Great Lakes. End of geography lesson for today kiddies.
Man, I haven't had a Vernors or Faygo since I left the Badger State 25 years ago. That brings back memories.
My dad and his friends used to swill and PBR and PBR's little brother, Red White & Blue, the taste of which is akin to dirty dish water. RW&B is possibly the only beer that tastes worse than Buckhorn and Falstaff.
Squarneck, I remember when I thought of Labbatts and Mooshead as "exotic". Compared to Schlitz and PBR, they are exotic.
One of the memories of my childhood. We had a lumber yard/ construction company and inside the store there was an old Coke machine, Tall and short bottles, both .25 cents, and my dad going through the store clinking two together making a nerve grinding noise. And the sitting with me on the loading dock teaching me how to make rings out of two coke bottles. Taking the lip of the mouth piece and joining it with another coke bottle, keeping them tight against each other while circling the "lips" then "pulling" and off popped a perfect finger ring. Funny how some things get stuck as memories , lol.
At a gas station I worked at as a young man we had 17 people pumping gas. We were second in gas sales in the state of Michigan, being on US 24 the route to Florida before I-75. Anyway we had the old coke machine with the 8oz glass bottles. These bottles had the city of manufacture cast in the bottom. When two of us would buy a Coke we would bet on whose was the furthest away from Michigan. Like Doug said just some memories and trivia.
I well remember when Coca-Cola (6 or 6.5 oz., I forget) was a nickel and Pepsi-Cola (12 oz.) a dime. When Coke went to a quarter, I quit! I think Luckies were around $4 a carton when I quit on September the 5th 1968. Inflation saved my teeth and my lungs! I also remember dime draft beer, bottles were a quarter, I did manage to live with the inflation on beer, in the pocket and in the belly.
