How do.  This looks like a great site with great people, and I tried wading through the search function to find out what I need to know, but seems faster to just ask.  Just got a squareneck yesterday, a Regal something-or-another (don't know how to tell what model).  I don't have any experience, but play a little guitar, self-taught, along with piano accordion and Cajun accordion.  Wanna play Cajun/Classic country/old tyme and such, and want to start out right.  I live in Fayetteville, AR., up in the NW corner of the state, in the Ozark Hills.

Okay here it is . . . wait for it . . . wait for it: any suggestions?  : )

Thanks!

Well, welcome to the Hangout. Love the avatar BTW. Ok here you go, pass go and collect the lessons at the best site for you here http://www.lessonswithtroy.com/dobro_lessons/  yes It just doesn't get any better especially for a beginner. You get exactly what you want from beginner to advanced and everything in between. Troy Brenningmeyer is a member and a regular on this site and goes above and beyond to help you out. On the left side of the screen on his site you will see beginners and more beginners lessons. You can not go wrong for the price. He also offers Skype lessons as do some other great musicians, if and when your ready I can provide you with a list. But do not delay, see Troy. big Then when you are ready you can go to Jimmy Heffernans site. He is another outstanding instructor with an outrageous sense of humor. He makes it fun to learn.

Thanks, Grizz. I'll get ahold of Troy right away. I appreciate you replying so quickly. That blue hillbilly profile pic is actually the logo for the Rogers, AR. high school football team, the Mountaineers; though I think they took away the pipe and smoke a few years ago. I guess it hit a little too close to home . . .

BTW, know of any dobro players in my area, NW Arkansas?

Thanks again!!!

On the left side of your screen you will see "members", mouse over it and select the top one listed "member search" click on it and you can search by State for other members or the site. Or even put up a post.

BTW you should delete you duplicate post before someone posts on it, then you can't. Just click on the "trash can" and follow the instructions. yes smiley

I started to order/download some of Troy's stuff (nice guy, talked to him this afternoon) and saw there was a spot for coupons on his order form. Anyone know where a guy can get some of those discount coupons?

Thanks!!!

You could try a Google search. In any event his lessons are IMO very affordable. He put a lot in to these things. Like i said you certainly won't be disappointed.

Hi Boozoo! Good talking with ya today. Yeah, I tried coupons for a bit. Now I just have a discount that's always there. If you buy $40 or more you automatically get 25% taken off of your total. It works for everything but Live Webcam Lessons, T-shirts, and my Hats. :-)

Hey Boozoo,

Welcome to the Hangout. I see you've allready been it touch with Troy. That's a real good thing. I can't think of anyone better to get you going. I started on dobro about 2 and a half years ago. Finding Troy's sight was the best thing that could have happened for me. Stick with him would be my advice. He will steer ya in the right direction and is a heck of a nice guy. I guess you allready know that if you"ve talked to him. Well, once again, welcome and hope you enjoy it here. I'm sure you will.

Kimbro

I own one and have been happy with it.

Hey guys, just wanted to say again, thanks for the help! I haven't had much to say because I went straight into the Troy video lessons and have been happily squeakin' and squakin' ever since. I've really enjoyed Troy's lessons; I'm just starting the beginner #3 lessons, though I have by no means achieved perfections on #'s 1 or 2 - just holding the damn bar right has been a continuing challenge.

Going through Youtube has been fun. One of my favorite sounds, years ago, was the dobro player with "The Whites", one of my favorite country bands in the 80's - even got to see them play out in Denver. Turns out, I had pretty good taste - I'm told their dobro player, Jerry Douglas, is a bona fide monster on the instrument. Additionally, Youtube has shown me that I dress just like Bashful Brother Oswald, so I guess I must be a natural for this instrument!

Now I'm thinking Troy is overdue for a little pestering . . .

Best to all, Jamey Hall

Boozoo,

Just down the road from you in Russellville with a kid at the U of A.  Played with Frankie Kelley in the 70's while I was in school there.   Friends named Bonnie and Steve Turner play Jazz in Fayetteville.  Love the Cajun stuff.  There is another Cajun squeeze box player in Morrillton named Mark Sponer.  When I'm not working, I just breathe in and out, so I'm available.  Jerry Roller lives down around Fort Smith/Alma and he's a lot better than me...

Hi Boozoo,

If you already play all those instruments that's going to speed you along as fast as the lessons will.  You already have a "sense" and a developed ear for music.  I'd recommend continuing the lessons w/Troy to learn technique and do a lot of "noodling' around, playing over backing tracks or loops to learn the neck and develop licks and riffs, etc.

          Hey Bill,

I'm just down the road from you in Morrilton!  I know Mark Sponer.  I played with him about a month ago at Keith Lipsmeyer's Clinic ( we jam on Tues.      nights.)  Mark played stand up bass and he did a great job.  We played a swing tune or two and he did that walking bass line perfectly!  Haven't heard him play the squeeze box yet.  I wish he'd come back and bring it.

Hi Larry,

It's good to hear from you.  Maybe we can get together sometime at a jam.  There was a nice jam at Atkins, but it shut down.  All I do is work right now and I'm looking toward that "retired" status.

I used to play steel guitar in Morrilton at the family arcade with Red Barnes for several years before he died.  Mark Sponer occasionally comes to jams in the Russellville area and plays bass. I want to take my fiddle down and play some Cajun tunes with him, but we haven't hooked up in a while.  Say hello for me if you see him.

Bill

Oh yeah, I remember Red Barnes.  You bet!  I'll tell Mark you said hello.  Maybe we'll run across each other at a jam sometime.
