Back in the 90s i bought a hound dog squareneck, paid about $800 for it. It was a very nice machine. Now i'm confused...I'm seeing the hound dog listed for $350-$499 at guitar center. Im also seeing one at elderly for $900? Should I stay away from the guitar center hound dogs?
Neil, love the name of the thread. I would say "better", not necessarily "good". Round neck or square are you looking at? I mean remember it's a Gibson. On the up side you can call it a Dobro and not get in trouble since they own the name. BFD
Im looking at square neck reso's. Im battling in my head over getting a nice import, or two not as nice imports. If I buy one it will be a wechter/scheerhorn for $750-$800. If I go with two, I'm thinking hound dog with F-holes (one tuned to open G, and the other tuned to open D). Im a builder do i think I can conquer any setup issues that arise with the houndogs. Guitar Center will ship me two hound dogs for $700. Looks like Im going in that direction, and maybe i wont be cryin all the time.....LOL!!!
Dobro® has used the name "Hound Dog" for a series of different models from 1967 on. The model you bought in the 1990s could have been one of the better versions of this guitar. I own a 1993 Hound Dog (round neck with a nut extender) and it's my wall hanger/ beach guitar. It's not bad, but I like my Tut Taylor much better.

Well it appears you have made up your mind. But remember this, any import you get will be a SWAG whether is is even acceptable or not. If you decide to go this way might I suggest you purchase where you can play each one. The one thing consistent about an asian import is it's inconsistency. If it were me I would be patient and watch for a good used American made instrument. Here I go AGAIN The tuning knobs are made for changing tunings. hehehe Once you have one good one then it may be time to look for the "Campfire" model like I did. YMMV again just my 02 worth.

I would also factor in the cost of some upgraded hardware; cone, spider, nut, saddles.
I bought a Hound Dog as my first reso because if I later decided the reso wasn't for me, I would know I hadn't invested too much. I didn't know at the time where they were made, and it later made me mad because I bought an American tradition, made in China. Well, I got hooked on the things, so I bought one from Tom Warner, and I love it. I still play my Chinese Dobro out on the porch, and it's not a bad instrument, but you can tell the differences between the two like night and day. The Wechters are nice, but they are made in China and set up in the USA. For the price of one Wechter or two Chinbros, you are almost at the cost of a good ol' American made reso that puts money in the pocket of one of our fellow Americans.
I like Grizz's advice: Save up for an American made reso, new or used.
You are all correct (right). This is part of my decision making process, as crazy as it seems. I committ to a plan mentally, but do nothing for a few days and let the details sink in. It takes away my impulse urges that are not sound (buying two low end imports). Thanks for the advice,

Now I have seen my fair share of cigar box guitars but what the hell is that box from?
A box yes, but a well built aoustic box. I didnt feel like bending sides that day. I've got build-along pics and plan to feature a thread of this as soon as i get my ducks lined up.
Kool. You do realize I was only kidding with you I hope. I had a cigar box but felt I was spreading myself way to thin starting everything at the same time so unfortunately I sold it. But I have enough to work with and on so I am a happy camper. BTW you got any sound bytes of that one? I would love to hear it.
No probs Grizz, Im Polish and love a good punn anyway I can get it. I posted this with more pics in the "reso-related" section. As soon as I have time I will put a vid or sound byte on that thread.
Okay! got the day off tomorrow so I can drive up to elderlys and get a decent reso. I'm gonna trade in my Morgan Monroe cascade banjo to offset the cost. I plan on looking at these 3 machines; rob Ickes, hound dog, and an import scheerhorn. any recamendations while I'm there?
Congratulation Neil !!!!!!!!!!!! I hope you get many, many years of enjoyment from it. I want to know how the hell you got out of Elderly's in 20 minutes. When I go they threaten to lock me in when they're closing.
Thanks Grizz, I got out quick cause my wife was with me. Also I had a shopping list of machines to try. Came down to the rob ickes or the WS mahogany w/screens. Didnt take a lot of playing to find the ickes sounded better. And the wife demanded I get what I wanted and not what I thought I could afford(shes been through this a dozen times).
