For your amusement. There wasn't/isn't supposed to be a reso on this track. This was to be an experiment to add more of an ethereal feel to the steel backup which was also "out there". If you have a problem recognizing the reso it is panned right. You can also hear an occasional scale snippet.

The 8 bar solo (2:54) was also supposed to be a throw away. I'm now told it may stay.

Just an example on how the reso might be used in non traditional (ie. popular) music.

Now thats what I talkin' about. Great stuff. I love outside the box thinking with this instrument. I think the Reso is great in there, it needed it wink smiley  Now what did you play on this? Both? I figure if Xavier Rudd can play the Reso and the Didgeridoo anything is fair game. So tie me Kangaroo down sport...................tan me hide when I'm dead Fred...........

Thanks Mike. I went in to lay down a steel track and ended up adding the reso as well. I just happened to have the guitar with me blush

I don't know if it is so much outside the box. No weird licks or anything like that. If there was anything out of the ordinary it was that the tune is in the key of G but the "bridge" (solo) doesn't go there until the very last chord. The changes are:

Am/Am/Em/Em

Am/Am/Dm/G.......

Pretty cool I thought.

What I meant by "outside the box" is it's not your Daddy's Bluegrass. approve I have seen so much done with this instrument that doesn't fit the stereotype, if you will. I believe a lot of people think this is solely a Bluegrass instrument and that couldn't be further from the truth. Do the names Jerry and Mike ring a bell. wink  BTW some fine playing on both instruments Howard. yes

Well done Howard! I like non traditional reso music very much and it's great when someone shows off our favorite instrument's range as well. Breaks over gotta go cook some food.

I like it very much. This is a style of music that I listen to quite a bit. Kind of Band of Horses-esqe! The reso solo is PERFECT in this song.
Thank you for sharing it.
You didn't mention the band name. ??? Is it on an album being released? iTunes?

Thanks so much for your comments. I'm really flattered. The artist/composer is Virginian Dave Glick. I've been recording and rehearsing with him since Thanksgiving 2011 and I could write a novel about this adventure. I believe his strategy is to have a number of tunes ready for streaming at the same time a website launches and the band "debuts", even though we've done several low profile gigs, sort of test runs.

The reso work was pure serendipity as he and I got together to rehearse for an acoustic writers showcase. He had never really heard a reso up close and I had been playing steel guitars for him. After he heard the guitar he arranged an experiment layering the acoustic and electric steels together. Dave has a terrific ear for layering tracks.  I laid down 6 solos and he chose his favorite.

The guitar you hear is exactly as mic'd plus a little reverb. No eq..no nothing. Pretty good tone as far as I am concerned smiley It will only get better as it gets tweaked.

I don't think I'll be playing much live reso with him unless he can line up a "really big gig". The logistics for me playing three guitars is just to scary for me to think about.

Probably more then you wanted to know. Thanks again for your comments.
