OK, moving right along here, I have a few more pictures to post. As much as it is against my nature, this is the point of this project, at least for Angie's guitar, where i get "a little help from my friends". Since Angie requested our "CoverGirl" paint job on her guitar, I am having my friend, luthier, and upright bass player extraordinaire do the honors. Of all the instruments we have built, there have only been three so far that wasn't painted by either myself or one of the guys that work with me (or two or three of us on one guitar, from time to time). Andy painted the other three. He helped us come up with our CoverGirl sunburst, so to keep it accurate on Angie's guitar, I took it over to his shop today, for him to do the honors.

Photobucket is throwing some weird IMG codes tonight, but we'll try some pictures and see what happens...

Here's a couple of shots of Angie's guitar "in-the-white" and ready to be stained and bursted. From the front...

and from the back...

I also got a fresh batch of RLR Spiders in today....

Apparently, Angie plugs in when she plays, so here is a shot of the Fishman bridge pick-up that will become part of her spider-bridge assembly....

While Andy is applying the sunburst to Angie's guitar across town, I will be sending this spider and pick-up to Erik Waynesmith of AMT up in Michigan. He has a unique system of mounting these fragile pick-up inserts to the spider. He also has equipment to test the pick-ups to make sure they are good before he installs them. I guess I could have learned how to do all this, but I figured I'd leave this one to the pro. Erik's bridge insert mounting system makes more sense to me than any others I have seen, and it seems to be a perfect situation for these Fishman bridge inserts.

On a more somber note, it looks like I might be making an unscheduled trip to California within the next few days. They did some tests on my mom yesterday. Not good news. They changed her status from medical care to hospice care. If I can get to CA fast enough, I'll get to see her one more time before she leaves this world. Yep, it's that bad. No need to go into details, just to say that radiation therapy and chemo would probably be more traumatic and harmful than a somewhat frail, 90 year old gal could stand. Do keep her and our family in your thoughts and prayers though. It means a lot to her, and to me.

Sorry, but some sad news to report.... My mom lost her battle this evening. Well, maybe she won. All she has been wanting for the past few weeks is to be with her Heavenly Father. Well, she's with Him now.

Keep those prayers coming, if you will, as we now have to deal with the loss, grief, all that stuff. I wasn't able to get to see her that one last time, and I do regret that, but this thing that took her came on amazingly fast. None of us saw it coming, or even had a clue.

One thing you all might find interesting, my father died several years ago. He was cremated and, since I was a woodworker even back then, I suppose, my mother asked me to make a fancy wooden box to hold his ashes. As sort of a surprise, I made one for my mom too. I didn't tell her I was going to do make one for her, but she seemed glad that I did, as it was a matching pair, just like my mom and dad. A short time back, she asked me if I still had it. Of course, I do. You guys would love it! Honduran Mahogany, lots of intricate joinery, a classy cross on the top, and a nicely polished tung oil finish. This was years before I even thought I would ever build musical instruments. I'll be pushing some mahogany through the saws tomorrow. That'll be bittersweet, I'll bet.

I'm really sorry to hear this Steve. Your Mom had a long life. Much longer than many of us will probably get. She must have been a pretty good Mother because she raised at least one good kid that I know of. Celebrate her life, remember the time you had with her and keep her close in your heart. She's not really gone as long as you've got your memories. We'll keep the prayers going back here at the reso ranch while you are out of town.

Bobby, I tell you this from the heart. I would love to meat you and each and every person on this site. But unfortunately, and I think about this a lot, I will probably not. However, that doesn't mean, that any of you are any less of a friend than someone I have met face to face. I know I'm on here a LOT, but that is because I enjoy it so. My old office is my music room now too, I keep Hangout in my tray on my computer and when I take a break i shoot the breeze with all of you. There would be a lot missing from my life without you all.

Hello all,

The boxes that Steve made for his folks' ashes turned out great. Very angular and simple--beautiful color and soft, subtle patina.

His mother's funeral was also good. She had been an ACTIVE member of the same church since 1948 (62 years).

Steve and I grew up across the street from each other and I was able to join him and his family because I happened to be in Southern California for an unofficial, informal, ad hoc "reunion" with over 20 "kids" who were in my 5th-grade class parochial school--fellow Catholic School Survivors.

Since I was staying with my folks in Santa Monica, CA (for Easter), I decided to visit McCabe's guitar shop on Pico Blvd. Claire Wagner wasn't working that day, but I met Matt Bradford and Louis Galper. They both played my Red Line reso (#0005) and were blown away by the sound.

It was so great to see the looks on their faces and the customers in the shop as everyone stopped to listen as a fine reso was put through its paces.

A great tribute to Steve's accomplishments and, indirectly, to Mary Ann Smith (1920-2010).

Best wishes to all,
Dirk Vanderloop

Hi All --

I'm glad Dirk was able to give an update on the memorial service, and all that. It was great that he and his family could be there. I went by McCabes guitar shop a couple of days after Dirk and his dad went there. Looks like they are interested in carrying at least our Rambler line of reso. guitars. We are building a couple of Rambler Peabody guitars that I'll bet they'd like. One will be British Racing Green, and the other will be Ferrari Red. The race is on!

But, back to this thread, I am back home now. My shop guys kept busy while I was gone, so Bobby's guitar body is re-bound, and just about ready to get its Avatar Blue paint job. Angie's guitar has the CoverGirl sunburst applied to it, and is ready to get the top coats of lacquer that go over it. Her spider is still up at Erik's shop in Michigan, where he will put the Fishman pick-up system in it.

I'll shoot some more pictures of some of this stuff, and try to put them up here early next week. Erik, if you like, you could shoot a couple pictures of what you are doing with the spider and bridge, and put them up here.

Thanks so much, Angie. It's a strange part of your life, that which directly follows the loss of a parent. I've done it twice now, so at least I won't have to go through it anymore!

Tomorrow I hope to pick up your reso. from Andy Todd, the guy I had put the CoverGirl sunburst on it. I haven't seen it yet, but he said it came out great. I'll try to get a shot or two of it off to you tomorrow.

I'm just back from Andy's shop. I think he did a great job on laying down the color on Angie's reso. Check it out...

Here's a shot of the top of the guitar. Andy expertly scraped the stain off of the binding (I thought he was going to leave that for me!) and he put a couple of coats of shellac over the CoverGirl sunburst to seal it and protect it.

Here's a shot of the back of the guitar. It will go into the finish room tomorrow for several top coats of nitrocellulose lacquer.

One more shot for now. This shot shows the figure of the curly maple sides. Birsdeye maple top and back, curly maple sides, and our own CoverGirl sunburst. I think it's looking pretty good, and the upcoming coats of lacquer should only make it look better!
