Chris and I are crowded around the computer, ooh-ing and ahh-ing over how gorgeous it is!!! I can't tell you how pleased I am with how it is turning out -- I love everything about it!
Chris' mandolin was just down the road at your buddy big Joe's getting a set up and the best mandolin bridge around, a Cumberland Acoustic, installed! ;-) |

I know it's been a long haul, esp. for you, Bobby, but the wait is nearly over. A nice scuffing and three coats of lacquer went on both guitars today. Same thiong tomorrow. Soon, it will be down to a week long wait for the last coats to cure, then we can buff them and build them out.

A little color for your weekend... As many of you know, we are in the "Lacquer-On" phase of these builds. You may have also noticed that we also seem to have a lot of other builds going on at the same time. This picture will add a little color to your Spring Weekend.
For some reason, we got Auto(mobile) Motivated, and painted two new RedLine Peabody Ramblers accordingly. In the following shots, you will see, among other things, Angie and Bobby getting successive coats, along with a PBR (Peabody Rambler) in British Racing Green and one dressed up in Ferrari Red.
Here's Bobby, with the green one on the left, and the red one on the right....

Similar, but "Back Shot" wtih Angie thrown in, for good measure....

This shot shows all four necks, plus Angie on the far left....

And here's sort of an overall shot, including Angie, Bobby, red, and green PBR's...

Please accept my apologies Bobbie. I like the color you chose. Much better than the first, I personally think the little darker color works better. Just my opinion. I really like the color that Angie chose as well. I hope the both of you have many, many years of enjoyment out of your instruments. Gotta love the curly maple.

Actually, we went into this "Blue Guitar Thing" nearly kicking and screaming. As Bobby can attest to, I tried to talk him out of it, several times. However, now that it is done, and keeps looking better with each coat of lacquer, it is sort of growing on all of us here at the RedLine Shop. In fact, somebody was looking at it yesterday and said it just might be the prettiest guitar we've made yet. Well, I don't know about that, but these just might be the prettiest TWO guitars we've made yet.
More lacquer goes on today. These just might be the last coats...

Hi guys,
So close! I am very thankful for the patience of all connected with this project. Life has "gotten in the way" more times than I had hoped during these builds. It's almost all behind us now though. I will final buff and assemble both Bobby's and Angie's guitars this coming week. I can go ahead and get Bobby's built through completion, as I have everything I need to complete it. All I am missing on Angie's is the RLR spider and Fishman pick-up system, which is being professionally installed at AMT, but I will go ahead and build the rest of the guitar as far as I can without the spider, etc., so it will be ready to drop-in and final assemble as soon as it shows up.
I'll post more pictures as these two guitars are completed.

Today we got Bobby B's body and neck buffed and ready for final assembly. His guitar should go together tomorrow. Here are a couple of shots, showing how I left it this evening, with its new shine on it. I use a buffing jack with two 18" wheels on it. Both are charged with different buffing compounds. Then we hand wipe the instrument with another compound,, to remove buffing residue, fuzz, etc.

Another back view...

Angie is right behind Bobby at this point, and will get her turn at the buffing wheel, most likely tomorrow, right after Bobby's guitar is assembled, set-up, and played a bit!

We made some good headway today. I have found that you don't always spend the day doing what you thought you were going to do, but it all works out. I noticed that Bobby had asked for a spider bridge insert that was made of maple and ebony. He wanted ebony under the wound strings and maple under the unwound ones. I had made bridges like this in the past, but not of sunken maple. Bobby knew that I make banjo bridges, and used to make banjo rims out of this kind of maple, so he requested it on his guitar.
In case you don't know, this particular sunken maple comes from the bottom of Lake Superior, where it has been for the past 100 years or so. Way back then, loggers floated their logs from place to place. Many of these logs would get water-logged and sink to the bottom. Recent technology, along with the discovery of these logs, has allowed for them to be harvested. Many people believe this wood can impart special characteristics to the tonal properties of their instruments. From a woodworking point of view, I have noticed that it is quite a bit different from any other maple I have worked with. Plus, it is genuine "Old Growth" which means it has far more growth rings per inch than most currently grown maple.
Anyway, please indulge me as I show you the next several shots. This little project ate up more of this day than I would have liked. If you get involved in a custom build, be careful what you ask the builder to do. Little things can add up!
Here's a shot of a brand new RLR Spider, an old partial ebony capped bridge, along with the sunken maple board I made a few bridges from...

I think I may have shown a similar shot eariler on, but here we are slotting a few new spiders from a recent batch. One for Bobby, one for Angie, and and extra or two. This is the slot these bridge inserts will go in...

Once a strip of sunken maple is resawn from the board, thickness planed, and sanded, ripped to width, and cut to length, we have to remove the part where the ebony will go. Here we are drilling holes in two double-bridge blanks that have been double-stick taped to a substrate...

Here they are drilled, and removed from the backing board...

Here we are routing out the rest of the maple away, using an inverted router and a fence....

Here we are making the ebony inserts...

Ebony and maple, ready to be glued together...

Here they are being glued. Remember, these are two bridges, as this piece will be cut in half later on...

Here we have double-stick taped the pieces to a long straight board and they are being leveled by going in...

and out of thickness sander...

All of that to get a sunken maple/partial ebony capped bridge for Bobby's guitar, plus a few extra for future builds....

As mentioned above, that little project ate more time than I had hoped, but I WAS able to get Bobby's guitar put together today. Here are a few shots I took after getting home tonight...
Front of guitar, in case...

Back of guitar, in case...

These late-night photo shoots are rough on Molly...

Front shot of guitar, out of case...

And from above...

Close-up of peghead detail. Bobby asked for a rosewood overlay. Bobby and Jason worked out the "RL" inlay....

Uh-Oh! Looks like we lost Molly, for the night, anyway...

One last shot for now. This shows Bobby's Peabody reso. guitar next to one of our RedLine Parlor Guitars. Guess which one is louder...?

A little more tweaking on Bobby's guitar tomorrow, and it should be ready to go. Angie's guitar is partially buffed, and we'll start putting it together tomorrow. Stay tuned!
