I have a squareneck 1978 60DS OMI Dobro and I have noticed that every so often the cone slips over to one side ever so slightly. Not much, but enough to start a buzz. I can tell it has slipped because the screw under the handrest is slightly off center. As soon as I pull the cone center again the buzz goes away. Why is my cone slipping, and is there anything I can do to correct this recurring problem? I am using Beard Special 28s and the cone is original. As far as I can tell the tailpiece angle looks fine as well so downpressure should be OK. Is this a common issue?

Check to see that your tailpiece is centered. You should have a dead-straight line that runs between the third and fourth string slots of the nut, to between the third and fourth string holes of the tailpiece, that should cross exactly over the tensioning screw of the spider. Also, check to see that the inserts are set equidistant from the tension screw. If they favor one side or the other, it''d pull the spider/cone assembly that way.

The soundwell __might__ be slightly off center, or the top improperly routed.
