ANyone here play squareneck tuned D-G-D-G-B-D (low to high), and if so, what gauge do you like for the low D & G strings to avoid rattling? Thanks.

Peter - I'm no expert and I just started playing dobro but was a guitar player for over 30 years so that's all I play dobro in right now - I actually don't use the low "D" string at all, ALA Keith Richards, so I don't have to worry about it and have experienced no rattling at all - I'm using Beard Special 29's so you can take that for what it's worth - I maily just pick and strum within the chords so as long as it's I IV V, or whatever I or you can play along with just about any body on any song - Probably not much help - DB

I`d say you`ll have to use a 56-ish guage or bigger.
There ain`t nobody can tell you a thing about playin` dobro, you just gotta learn it for your own self!! (a quote from the king himself - Bashful Brother Oswald)

I play a high tension low c and I use a 78 on the low c. I would probably like something between 65 and 70 on the low d and a 56-58 on that G, just like in dobro g.

Thanks for all this input. The 56 that's on the reso now is too floppy, so I will probably try a 59. I may even tune it the way I tune my lap steels -- like Dennis (hey -- good to see another SGF member here), I don't use the low D -- on steel, I set up the 2-5 strings like Keith Richards, then add a C on top to get suspended chords. Low-to-high: G-D-G-B-D-C. this helps me play Sonny Landreth-licks (in my own feeble way). The low B string is "standard" Dobro confuses me, but what do you expect from a b@njo player...
