I just got a metal resonator (Dean Heirloom) last night.
So, what can anyone tell me about:
1. replacing the nut, and
2. cone replacement.
I'll may do both at some point in time, although not soon. I guess what I'm asking is how do I know if such an upgrade is warranted, e.g., tell-tale signs.

I have one of those, the brass one, and I thought that the cone and nut that it came with were great. I replaced the cone with a beard cone, and didn't notice much of a change. I have two biscuit cone resonators and the dean is definitely got alot of punch to it, compared to my generic mahogany import. It took awhile to break in, but I really think as long as you've got some good bright strings on it it will start to amaze you with some really cool sounds. As for the nut, I replaced one on a different resonator and definitely noticed a brighter cleaner ring to it, so you might try that before the cone replacement. It could depend on what cones it came with also, because the generic imports probably use whatever is available, so it might be just luck that mine sounded so good, or it could be typical. I haven't heard of many other people playing these guitars, but it is certainly my main reso. Hope you have a similar experience with it.
