Hi,

Just wanted to get an opinion on the Mcintyre pickup for dobro. I have an LR Baggs para di box and am currently running a cheap transducer. The sound is not too bad, but can definitely use improvement. Is the SRF-40 a decent buy (i don't really want to spend the money on the $200 pickups like the fishman)? Any other reccomendations for a pickup in the $100-$150 range?

i used a Mcintyre pickup in my old dobro and didn't like it cause 1.) there was tons of pick noise and 2.) it didn't really sound like my dobro. now i use a condenser mic and run it through the L.R. Baggs paracoustic and love the sound! the mic is one of these flexible gooseneck mics that velcros onto the side of the guitar so the neck can be adjusted to point in any direction. it's a little tricky to EQ it right so as not to get feedback but with the L.R. Baggs, i have a good amount of control. i'm also a big fan of the Shure sm 57. simple and effective.

i've never been a fan of the way acoustic instruments sound with pickups. i just don't think they sound like acoustic instruments anymore. just my opinion. although, if it's simply volume you're after then the Mcintyre will do the trick and for a negligible price.

I use a McIntyre and really don't get a lot of pick noise like will but that may be because of the placement. Will is right though in that nothing but a mic will capture the real sound of the guitar. For me, when I need to use it, the McIntyre is close enough.

I have to say that Mcintyre is not very good, mainly because it doesn't give you an acoustic sound. It gives more of lap steel sound, more electric than acoustic. Maybe it can be good if you use it in combination with a microphone, so that the mcintyre you use with low volume, just to give you the power to "going out" with the sound, using maiinly the sound of the microphone.
Talking about using only a pickup, I suggest you to spend a little more (it's christmas ! :-) ) , and buy the Schertler. At the moment is the best you can get to give you the acoustic sound of your guitar.

Will, can you tell me which mic you bought and where i might find one? Also, anyone have a good website for the schertlers? They do seem to be very pricey...
