Got my first GT PBS square neck resonator a few weeks ago and wanted to customize it a bit. Last year I'd added some extra sound holes to a GT Dojo - a single cone resonator guitar with a 5 string banjo neck. It was an easy job which helped to let the sound out and made the instrument look unique.

Drilling large holes in new instruments always makes me a little nervous but it only requires some careful preparation and a few woodworking tools.

The inside lip of resonator sound hole covers measures 2 7/8 inch dia so I used a slightly smaller common 2 3/4 hole saw. It left a fairly clean cut which was sanded smooth with sandpaper wrapped around a wood dowel.

Here's how it looks with different combination of screened and open sound hole covers. A thin strip of rubber or masking tape is run along the lip of the sound hole covers to give a snug press fit.

The 3 smaller holes at the end the fretboard are a reference to the 3 holes used on the Dobro as discussed in this thread about sound hole screens resohangout.com/topic/10708/. The holes shown here differ from the original by being in a straight line and using a larger center hole;

The raised covers were made from a chrome plumbing caps epoxied to a regular cover. They're used, at the recommendation of my son, for the unusual and somewhat bug-eyed face impression they provide;

Doing something like this probably lowers the resale value of the instrument but that just means I'll never sell it.

The 2 additional sound holes make it somewhat louder, you can feel the puff of resonant air through the holes. Switching to the screenless sound hole covers available from Beard increases the volume noticeably and is a less radical step than adding more sound holes.

I don't care for the look of the plain wood view inside the open sound holes so I'll probably keep the screened covers on the lower sound holes and add a couple of temporary waterslide art decals inside the body where they can be seen through the screenless top 2 sound holes.

It would have been even louder if I'd added a hole in the side of the guitar facing the audience but I was concerned that residual stresses in the bent wood might start cracks along the sound hole.
