didn't find this forum until after purchasing this guitar earlier today. just wondering if anyone has this,or any experience with it. this is my first resonator type guitar. paid $275, free shipping and hard case too. I realize this on the low end of the scale, but it was what my budget allowed for now.

general pic pulled from the web

Hi Bruce and welcome to the Hangout. Hey ya gotta start somewhere and when you get hooked, as I know you will, you can get a fair portion of your money back, or at least you won't loose much and you can get GAS like the rest of us. And like the old advertisement said "gee dad it's a Honer" By the way, and I know you have heard this probably a million times but I can't resist, forgive me, how is Robin. I am so sorry.

Guitar acquisition syndrome

Bruce,

I know nothing about roundnecks but I see that you have other instruments so I assume that you know a bit about music. If it sounds good to you, then you got a real good deal and it will get you started. If it sounds lousy then you are not out a whole lot of money. I am a believer in getting the least expensive instrument that sounds decent for a starter and then getting a more premium instrument later on. Strings make a heck of a difference on the sound of an inexpensive guitar, the ones that came with it are likely junk. Many here use DAdario strings and they should be available locally. I am not sure of the tuning or gauges for a round neck, but many here use EJ 42's on Square Necks. Good luck .

GAS: What Mel said. If you stay with it sooner or later you Will get it. It's inevitable buy enjoyable. Right Dean?

I already have GAS I guess. I'm always looking on CL for some kind of guitar, pedal, amp, etc. yesterday I was looking around on GC's website and came across the Hohner. my first choice was a Dean A/E .it was chrome or nickle, can't remember off hand. thought about it 10 minutes to long, someone else snagged it. $199!! (pic below) I realize Dean's are pretty cheap, but as I said before it is what my budget allows right now. I then had some errands to do,so I went by my local GC and was looking to trade in a cheap Squier I got in trade for a MIM Sunburst Strat. the Strat at GC was a nice looking guitar but the frets were shot, and it didn't sound as good as my Squier with the GFS pups. I came home and called about a Dean Heirloom at a GC in Maryland, but the guy said it was a factory second.repaired broken neck and he said it didn't look right. that's when I decided on the Hohner. my birthday is in a couple of days (45) and the Hohner is my birthday present. I'm just learning how to play. I had a guitar about 10-12 years ago,but my carpal tunnel did not allow me to play for any length of time without my hands aching so bad. finally got the go ahead from SAIF for the surgery last summer and my hands are almost like brand new.

well I bought it over the internet,so I will have to wait until I get it to see how it sounds. luckily there is a guy at work who is a damn good picker so he can tell me about it. I'm sure he will tell what a piece of crap it is as he has some handmade dobro from back east that he paid about 5 or 6K for. if it sounds bad or I don't like it,I can always return it to my local GC within 30 days.

how about a slide? I have a glass one I bought about 10-12 years ago. I bought a Coricidin bottle at the same time (ala Duane Allman) but it just didn't feel right.
is there a special kind for round necks vs square necks? metal or glass? thanks

Grizz - Posted - 05/20/2010:  14:46:25

Square neck players use a bar not a slide, generally Chrome or Stainless Steel. I have seen round neck played with Glass, Chrome, Copper etc. I am going to be getting for Christmas I hope a 3 String Cigar Box Dobro. I have a glass so I will try that first. Hell, I just seen video where a guy puts a bottle in a plastic bag, breaks the bottle, takes out the neck and puts tape on the area where it broke, sticks his finger in it and voila'. Hence the term "bottle neck slide". Cheap thrills.

I looked at some bottle neck slides today that a local guy makes. $25 each. I had this bottle cutter thing when I was a kid that you laid a bottle on it,turned it and scored the neck, tapped the bottle neck with a rubber mallet and it would pop the neck right off. it only worked about half the time. wish I had that now.nothing like 10 year olds playing with broken glass! a guy in Memphis (visiting my brother for Christmas) tried to sell me a cigar box guitar. couldn't get the thing to work right, store was filled up with smoke from their corn stove not working right. I'm standing there for 10 minutes while this guy gives me his pitch,he finally gets it working. it sounds o.k $700 !! he had a flying V one for $1400. good trip though, went to Clarksdale one day to visit the Delta Blues Museum.

Go down to your nearest Chinese tool store and pick up one of these socket sets. I got one for $9.95 without the tapered ends shown on the two smallest. I can use about three of them on my fingers for round neck playing. The others make ok emergency bars for lap playing. I keep the smallest in my pocket when I'm out, in case I run into a squareneck that needs playing.

And I can use them to work on my car.

Those are far better guitars than the guy was selling in Memphis. his looked like a cigar box with a broom handle stuck in it.

I will eventually, when I save up the money, own the Delta Tramp. He has 2 different models and I haven't decided yet which one I want. When I place my order we will discuss it.
By the way, cool avitar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well the Hohner was a big hit at work with the guitar players. they all liked the look and sound of it. we will see on Monday when the bluegrass picker is there. he plays a Beard and a Scheerhorn,so he may not even want to touch my chinese Hohner.

Grizz - Posted - 05/22/2010:  19:33:59

Hey Bruce, Beard maybe, Scheerhorn definitely not, they don't even let imports in the same room with Tim's.

Bruce Wayne - Posted - 05/22/2010:  19:48:46

I guess I should clarify: one is being built for him. he put an order in for one a while back (4-5 years is what I think he said) ,should have it in another 2-3 years? I'm pretty sure he said it was Tim Scheerhorn.

Grizz - Posted - 05/22/2010:  21:13:16

Actually he should be seeing his soon if it was that long ago. The last I heard Tim was 36 to 42 months until he completes his orders and retires. He still will make special orders for some professionals buy not for the general public. I cant afford the strings much less the horn.

I called GC where I bought (over the phone) the Hohner and they gave me a $50 credit back on my account because of the dent in the case that happened during shipping. with that $50 and the $25 off I got when I bought it and the money from my folks for my birthday it will only cost me $25 out of my pocket!
