How about adding an online tuner to the website.  I have purchased three electronic tuners, and maybe it's just me, but none of them works worth a dang. Of course they are all made in China, where else?  To have a tuner that was easy to use, right here on the Reso Hangout, would be neat!

If there only were D B G D B G, that would take care of most of us, but maybe some other dobro tunings would be good too, as long as the tuner was here anyway.

There are a several online guitar tuners, but I have yet to find one set up for my favorite instrument!

Just a suggestion,

Dave

Maybe it IS just you.  I don't think I've ever seen a tuner that wasn't made in Asia, and I don't think I've ever seen one that didn't work fine.  Recommendations?  Sure.

Peterson Strobo-Clip (China).  $70 is a lot for a clip-on tuner, but it works great, very accurate, and has a "sweetened" mode specifically for Dobro that incorporates the slightly flattened B strings that you'll want.

Snark (China) $13 at Elderly, this pup's ridiculously fast, easy to read, great in low light, and so inexpensive that you can own one for every instrument.  If I hadn't bought the Strobo-Clip, I'd own a batch of these clip-ons.  It's completely unfair how good these are at the price.  Sturdy little buggers, too.

Korg CA-30 ($12-$15, eBay and everywhere).  Who knew there was a thriving tuner-building business in Vietnam?  Not clip-on, but you can add a clip pickup to make it work like one.  Bulletproof, versatile, needle-type readout, easy to use.

Spend a minute with Google, and you'll find a buttload of free online tuners that'll easily set up for any tuning you need. get-tuned.com/online_guitar_tuner.php was easy to set for GBDGBD or anything else.  Feel free to email me and I'd be happy to try to figure out why you're having trouble with the tuners you've got.

I second the motion on Snarks. They are cheap and work fine.

Make sure your tuner is set to 440

Korg CA-30 for about 25 years now---SOOOO dependable that if I break or lose one I would replace it with same.It is such a bluegrass industry standard that at festivals this is the one the vendors always have in stock at $19.95 and reportedly they still sell as well as the clip on models. Hard to beat in the catagory of credit card size "pocket" tuners.

OK, OK,  You guys have convinced me to take another shot at the china tuners.  I'm gonna order a Korg this time and hopefully I'll have as good results as you.

The tuner I am now using now is an old flattop guitar that I tuned to GBDGBD. I just tune the dobro off of it.  At least it works every time, but it takes up needed space in the corner so wifey says.

I was a mechanic years ago, but when they started putting all that electronic crappola on the vehicles, I just had no desire to learn about it.  So about the time some electronic device doesn't work for me, I just haven't got the patience to figure out why.

Wish me luck,  Dave

I sure wouldn't over look that little Snark. Cheap and accurate

badger - Posted - 11/25/2011:  14:07:15

If my Korg dies or goes missing, I'll get a Snark.  Clip-on is the way to go nowadays.  YMMV.

Hey Badger, it appears the only way my Korg GT-12 is going to die or go missing is if I make it happen. evil I can sit in the den and mama bear can tune the Harlow in the living room. I s*** you not. shock So I don't see a Snark or anything else in my immediate future.

I'm with you Tom and Mike. Korg make nice stuff, I have the Korg Guitar/Bass Tuner GA-30. 7 tones. It just keeps on working. It has the bottom B note. Nice too if you need to use the built in 1/4" jack.

I agree on Korg products, at least the way they used to make them. My WT-12 is 31 years old, and still works perfect.

Batteries have been in it for so long they are dated Jan 1996. (Duracells of course) Only problem is, it won't fit on my peghead.........

Korg WT-12

I have no idea when I last changed batteries. 31 years? Well that puts a different tuner way on the back burner. Now the last one, mounting it to the peg head,  I may be able to help you with. Never forget the handyman's secret weapon.................... DUCT TAPE!!!!!!!!!! You know what that means........... A little of Red Greens philosophy on this silvery gray marvel of modern science. “Spare the duct tape, spoil the job”   “If at first you don’t succeed, use more duct tape”  and the ever popular “If the women don’t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy”

Well my new tuner showed up today, and I couldn't wait to give it a try.  I really wasn't expecting much since I already had three other disappointments.  I was going to get a Korg, but I found a Snark SN-2 first, so I thought I'd give it a try.  Only twelve bucks, less than half what I paid for two of the "dead" ones.

Guess What?  I stuck the battery in and clipped it to the peghead, and barley touched a string with my finger. I could hardly believe it but it was already working, and fast.  All I could do is say WOW!  This thing is really neat!

I want to thank you guys that convinced to give the electronic tuners another try! Now I just hope it keeps working this good.

Sometimes cheaper IS better. You don't always get what you pay for.

Kannobro - Posted - 12/07/2011:  09:24:04

I use www.metronomeonline.com. It has a 440 hz tone in addition to the metronome. I tune the top B (thickest) to an A after a string change. Use that A to tune the D strings. Use the D strings to tune the G strings. Then I'll pluck the top three (G,B,D Strings) and tune the B string to the sweet spot, then repeat for the bottom three. It sounds like a bit of work but it sure helps your ear with relative pitch which I think is a great aid! It just takes a minute or so after some practice

1earthtwang - Posted - 12/07/2011:  19:48:43

I have a Korg CA-30, a Seiko ST737, and a Sabine z-300m clip on. They all work great. Be sure that you give the string a good pluck and don't take your reading as the string dies out or you will be trying to tune all night!! I like the clip on the best for my reso and the Korg CA-30 for my pedal steel. Do check and make sure your tuner is set at 440 as someone else mentioned. Once in a while I have accidentally changed mine.......clumsy fingers?

tooslobro - Posted - 12/07/2011:  21:36:51

Well, Ya might know......  I took my Sabine tuner out just to check it, and sure enough, it was already set at 440, so that wasn't the problem with it.  So I just set it on the desk and  picked up the dobro with the new Snark clipped to it and started checking the tuning with the Snark.

I'll be danged if the Sabine wasn't  working too.  I don't quite what to think about that,  kinda strange.  It moves slow next to the Snark though, but I would have settled for that a couple weeks ago!
