I have a Gold Tone SM Wessie and probably need to put new strings on it. I have several packs of GHS Resonator strings in sizes 16-18-28-36-46-56. I'd like to know if anyone uses this guage strings on  this guitar. I tune it DGDGBD. I know many probably don't use that tuning, but it's really a mellow sound for the Wessie.

Karen, here it is from the Gold Tone web site

Because of its construction, care must be given to the correct tuning and string gauges to avoid bridge, bracing and neck problems. The strings supplied (.014, .018, .026w, .034w, .044w, .056w) allow G (DGDGBD), D (DADF#AD) and similar tunings. Your Weissenborn will not tolerate any additional excessive tension (such as E tuning (EBEG#BE), Dobro G tuning (GBDGBD or heavier) and will void the warranty.  The string tension should be no more than 165lbs at pitch.  There are several online string tension calculators available such as this one to determine correct string gauges for any desired tuning.

Check the tension of whatever you want to use. I would NEVER exceed it! As a matter of fact I would be using Newtone Aloha strings that have been discussed here at length many times before. Rather than me repeating myself  if you do a search I am sure you will find what I have posted. If not let me know.

Yeah Mike, I read that info from Gold Tone's website, but had this horrible inclination to use the strings I have! Guess it's not worth wrecking my guitar so will probably order the Newtone Aloha strings. I usually do a search before posting a topic, but sometimes it's overwhelming to pore over all the posts and then not find a pertinent answer in the first 5 minutes. LOL

Mike, was just checking on the Wessenborn Group for info on the Aloha strings and found that Liz wasn't too impressed with them, especially the 6th string sound. She said you mentioned you also liked D-Addarios or Pease strings for your Weissenborn, and was hoping you'd elaborate on that. How about it? We need your help!

Don't give in to the inclination.  I can show you the crack that will result in the top of your SM if you either tune up or use heavier strings.  The Gold Tone SM is not built for the long haul.  But it is still a fun way to get into Weissenborn style guitar.  I am the second owner of my SM.  The previous owner briefy tried the heavier strings and tuned up on occasion.  In spite of my good care it eventually did crack.  I could see what was developing when I bought it so I'm not crying.  Now if I could only get my hand and arm inside the body to properly cleat the crack I'd be happy.

Check out the posts in the Weissenborn Group regarding  installing a bridge support system. I fashioned my own JLD Bridge Doctor type system,

and subsequently installed a set of EJ42's, .016 - .056. I do have to mention I use the Open G, low to high, DGDGBD tuning, and other Open D

tunings. So far, after a couple of months, there has been no change or cracks in the top of my import Weissenborn.

As far as Liz and the Aloha's it's like Fords, Chryslers and Chevy's.  Oops. No more GM's for me. I have Aloha's on 5 instruments and love them.  Anyway, yes I do use heavier strings on my Bear Creek. It can take what I use and then some. I use the John Pearse 3160's  015 018 027w 038w 048w 060w., I would NOT use them on a GT. Also I never tune up further than open D - D A D F# A D  I have a Reso for beyond that.  It is always a good idea to check tension on the chart that was referenced in the Gold Tone Warranty I posted for you. If I would have had some spare cash I definitely would have stocked up. If I were you and your going to order I would try the discount code and if that don't work someone post one for 5%.
