I want to publicly thank Paul Beard for his awesome service and for saving my bacon. I am the proud owner of the Sheerhorn/National Rob Ickes prototype, which is a great guitar. I played Merlefest last weekend and really wanted to bring it with me but the guitar was a little too bright for my needs, so I decided to try the Legend cone and a 14 spider to warm it up a little. I called Paul the week before I had to go to Merlefest and he said to ship it up to him and he'd turn it right around so I'd have it in time. Paul spent a lot of time on the phone with me before getting the guitar and after he got it so that he would get the setup that I wanted. I also needed the nut lowered a little for my capo.  Long story short, I got the guitar back in time and it is amazing. Still plenty loud and has the sound I needed for the band I was playing with (Niall Toner Band from Ireland). This guitar now almost plays itself. No surprises and plays like silk.  And Paul called me after I got home to see how it went. That's remarkable care and service for a guy who is really busy running a business. Thanks Paul, I really appreciate it.

Paul is the real deal.  Glad to hear you agree!

I have Legend Cones in my Appys, I was thinking about taking them up there this summer to have them tweaked, now I know I am.

Dan also posted this on Reso-Nation, and this what I posted there:

Brings up an interesting point. I won't get into the National-made spider, but I'm curious about the Scheerhorn cone being exchanged for the Beard Legend cone.

It's the first time I have heard of anyone referring to it as "bright."  For example, if you use a pencil as a "ringer" of a Scheerhorn cone as opposed to a Quarterman cone when suspended in air as if they were some kind of bell, the Scheerhorn will typically ring with a longer sustain.

I haven't done this myself with a Legend as part of the equation, but I have yet to come across anyone that said they prefer that cone over the 'horn cone because the Scheerhorn was too "bright."

Obviously Paul did a series of things to modify the voicing of the guitar, including replacing the spider, but it intrigues me that when you got on the phone with him initially that he would offer one of his Legend cones as imparting what might be a "darker" sound.

The Legend cone gave my birch laminate a deeper voice up the neck and volume over the Scheerhorn, and more volume on the koa.

So I guess you're saying on the birch laminate that "a deeper voice up the neck," when playing the lower strings,  might translate to more bass?

And with the koa, it impresses you as being louder, but the tone/voice doesn't seem any different than the 'horn cone?

Alan Rausch - Posted - 05/01/2014:  10:45:56

On the birch the deeper tone is also prominent on the high strings, very full sounding. It was already bassier on the lower strings than the koa. The koa didnʻt change voice much, but a little more volume.

Let me be clear about what I said. The guitar was too bright, not any of the individual components. I don't know if a Scheerhorn cone is brighter than any other. I have several of them in other guitars and they sound great. It's the whole package of Paul's parts and his setup that got me what I was looking for.  Paul didn't offer any solutions over the phone - I never said that. When he got the guitar he played it, we spoke about options, and I left it to him to do what he thought best. Obviously, that was the right decision because it sounds great.

My point in posting this was to sing Paul's praises about his parts, skill, and especially service. And, by the way, his pricing is extremely fair.

Dan, I replied to your post on Reso-Nation. It's getting a little cumbersome to carry on the discussion on both forums.

What is really cool, beyond Paul's skills and his excellent service, is that it's pretty exciting that folks can own what is essentially a legitimate new Scheerhorn these days and they don't have to fork out over $10,000!

While you're singing Paul's praises, how about adding another verse about packing and shipping?  I ordered a #14 spider a couple months ago, and it arrived with enough protection that it would have been safe even if the gorilla in that old American Tourister commercial had gotten a hold of it.

Okay, I'll chime in:  Last year at ResoSummit, Paul worked on my Wolfe for me, despite the fact that he had more work than he could handle, and didn't charge me near enough for what he did, in my view.  I've ordered all sorts of parts from his store, and they always arrive quickly and in great shape.  Plus, as Dan pointed out, the guy will actually talk to you on the phone.

A class act all the way around.

Three cheers for Paul Beard, we hope he returns to ResoGat this year!  And congratulations on playing MF Dan!  I am anxious to see and hear this new Scheerhorn.

Two folks to me you can never go wrong with, and that Paul Beard and Dan Brooks. Honest and straight forward folks. There are more but those two are just good folk.

Sign me in to the fan club, great place to buy and service a Dobro.

I bought an MA-6 that was unused but had sat in the inventory of the shop where I bought it for a long time.  It was six years old when I purchased it from the shop, so I called Paul just to see what he thought.  I expected to have just a brief discussion, but Paul spoke with me for a long time, asked me many questions about the guitar's performance.  Everything about the guitar was great from my perspective, but Paul nevertheless made a bunch of recommendations I wouldn't have thought of, and suggested that I send the guitar to him for a tune-up.  All this for a new guitar, mind you.  I think that says a lot about Paul's commitment to his instruments and the satisfaction of his customers.  I couldn't have been more impressed.

Certainly not enough can be said for Paul. I had a catastrophic mess that I won't go into detail, but Paul went out of his way, above and beyond what was suppose to be. He and the crew are a great bunc of folks to work with. High on my list of favorite people!

There are great businessmen. And there are people of great character. Paul is an example of a person who embodies both. I am grateful he is a huge part of the reso community.
