Any thoughts or ideas about pick ups? (Power Wagons excluded)

Seriously, there's got to be a bunch of ways to mic and/or amplify these things. Currently, I'm running a lap steel pick up that I plopped into the body at the bottom of the neck, but I'm sure that if this was an instrument of pedigree that would be out of the question...MInd you, with a Cry Baby and a Tube Screamer through my old Bassman 4X12 I get some seriously 'sick' slide grind. Ok, not bluegrassy, but HOWLIN'!!!!

Now, has anyone tried those spider bridge pickups or anything like that? I've mic'd mine up a bunch of ways, but mics tend to be a nuisance...

Schatten pickups are p[retty popular with the reso crowd

Schatten and Schertler Basik have a good reputation, but the new state of the art is the Fishman under-the-saddle pickup, combined with the Fishman Aura Jerry Douglas stompbox. Do not buy any other unit until you take the time to research this system.

Very cool....seek, and hopefully I shall find...

Me again...I posted a link in the, what else, links section of the site that tags directly to the Fishman page featuring the Aura system. I love the emulation choices you can create with this thing! Now all I have to do is FIND one around here...first I'll have to explain to them what it is, then we'll try and find it, I guess...I hope.

If I'm not mistaken, the new Jerry Douglas model that Paul Beard just came out with has two options. The "plain jane" for about $4,500 or the fancy version with upgraded wood (sapelle all the way around) and the whole pickup deal. The upgrade jacks the price up to around $7,000. I would suspect that most of the price increase is for the pickup. Everything I have tried doesn't really capture the growl of a dobro including many different mics. Electronics are getting better every day though.

Okee dokee...at 7 grand I can clearly see that it's not in the cards for me!!..Man, I don't even pay that for a truck...then again, I build my own trucks.

Hmm....I'm sensing the beginning of a reso-building project perhaps? Why not!!

I tell the soundman to turn my mic up.

Bunyan Bob - Posted - 07/31/2008:  19:19:23

Speaking of sound guys, ever faked one out by screwing around with your picking and dropping a note here and there to make it sound like the mic is cutting out? Man life on the road was fun!!!

Naw, the pickup and aura pedal add about $400 or so to the price. The rest of the $2k uplift is for fancy wood, custom case, etc. (Note that the "basic" JD model is $5200.)

Fishman under-saddle pickup (retail): $169.95
JD Aura pedal (retail): $249.95

I heard Jerry Douglas playing the prototype last year in a Paul Simon concert, and it sounded like a dobro, only at electric guitar volumes. Amazing.

Bunyan Bob - Posted - 07/31/2008:  21:44:17

Now that's more like it!...400 bucks is only twice what I paid for my axe...perfect. That kind of thing I can live with.

Now how much for the set of Jerry Douglas model fingers to go with that?

No charge. Just practice. And then practice some more.

yeah, yeah, yeah....I get it.

But can Jerry Douglas hot rod a chainsaw? Oh Jerry, if you're listening...and you can, I don't want to know...heh, heh...

You can bet if he can, SEARS will have a frightening increase in chainsaw sales!! Heck... Id' by the first one! Then take it back because it had a untraceable "BUZZ"! <--couldn't resist

SEARS?!?!

Man, is that a dirty word in a chainsaw shop...Who knew you could spell manure with a pair of 's's .. Then again, if Jerry Douglas could hotrod a chainsaw as well as he can drive a dobro, well, then maybe we would have something to look forward to!

...hmmm, then yet again, no offense Jerry, but a Sears chainsaw would need divine intervention to be able to do pro bushwork. heh, heh, heh

I think all the 'name brand' pickup systems are good enough for stage work. Im using the Fishman rare earth now and is great-although VEY snesitive at set up time. Every pieze type system Ive heard has some 'quackiness' and or needs some EQing to dial out overtones. My fishman in my model 27 is excessive in the mid range(around the low 'D' note) and needs some EQing there when running thru the amp or house. But once thats dial in, its a great pickup. From what Ive heard about and listen to, the Arua ay be the best sounding system yet.

Hey John when you get a funky strong frequency like that do you 'parametric' it out?

I agree that the Aura looks to be one wild system....it's also a wild kinda price...Up here anyways. I'll have to search further...maybe internet or something.

Just which model mic are you using? Are you attaching it to the guitar or using a mic stand?

A friend of mine has a Regal Dobro but can't hear it that well and needs it louder. We change the cone to a Quarter man and still not loud enough for him. What else can we do to it and keep in acoustic so mics are out.

Meantooth Grin - Posted - 08/17/2008:  19:00:48

I have a Highlander Magnophonic in my tricone.
I worked in a high end guitar shop and I tried alot of different pickups and
I think the Highlander stuff is the best option out there from what i've seen.

I run mine right into the sound system and tweak it there.

Fishman stuff was just too bright for me, it got overwhelming fast.
That and they seemed a bit noisy.

The Highlander can be a bit noisy in studio conditions as well but the sound is a lot fatter and i didnt get that high "tinny" sound.

I have an OMI that came with a stamped cone, plastic nut, and maple bridge.

I leveled out the spider and sanded some bumps out of the ledge that the cone sits on. Went with a JPQuarterman cone, brass nut, and ebony maple bridge inserts. Now it is scary loud, a big difference!! I have always liked the way a brass nut ties the sound down to the neck. I also think the open strings ring more like a note from the slide.

My friend has a Black Regal with the slotted headstock and I did all of the same on his except the JPQ cone and a brass nut. It came with a spun cone and a bone nut. His also was born again!! A lot louder and it almost sounds like a my OMI Dobro

All the above is Hawaiian style not spanish, what style is your friend playing?

I mounted a regular magnetic guitar pickup on an 80's Regal, which would work if I ran it through an amp that I could really pump up the mids on. Another thing I've resorted to is running the reso through my old Match-Bro before going into a system or someone else's amp.

Now I have a Gold Tone/Beard on which I stuck a Lace pickup. I had to put the pickup on a thin piece of wood and tape it to the top of the guitar in order to bring it close enough to the strings, but I'm getting a decent 'bro sound...I get the best tone when I run it through my ancient Baldwin Professional 1X12" in the front channel with the multi-colored buttons and push the "Mid I" or "Mid II", depending on the room.

Bunyan Bob: I'm down here in the midwest 'states, where small saws are the norm. I'll just have to get by with my Jonsered 90 and Husky 395 (both ported; Jonsered also has a pipe)

Google up Arboristsite for chainsaw talk.

Ok Square Neck He already has a new Quarterman cone. I bought it for him and we put that into his black Regal model. But the brass nut and ebony insert? Where do I get them and how do I install them? Can you send me an email?

A machine shop made the blank for my brass nut but I think regal uses bone which is great also! They should have the bridge inserts wherever you bought the Quarterman cone. This is where I bought my inserts from....

They will need to be cut to fit.
