Hi,
If I were looking to buy a reso (round neck) and didn't want to spend a great deal of money to get me started what would be a good, value for money instrument?
For those who play the banjo I am thinking what is Reso equivalent to say, a Goodtime or a GoldTone CC100?
Thanks,
M

I have a Gold Tone Beard model, basic mahogany version, which I like a lot for a woodbody, bluegrass / country type sound.
I've been reading a lot about metal-body starters lately, and Republic Guitars is getting generally good reviews. I'm hoping to get one of theirs later in the year. (Let me be clear - I haven't played one yet! This is just a read-between-the-lines, general impression, hunch kind of thing... do your own research too.)

I'd suggest looking for a used mahogany Gold Tone Beard from someone who is trading up. Make sure it is one that was set up in the Beard shop.

I got a chance to play one of those Republics in a local store close to here...not bad. No idea where they're coming from or what they're about, but not bad...

A friend of mine has a Scheerhorn and he's been leaving it home and using a Wechter/Scheerhorn Rob Ickes model. It sounds great.

D'oh, should have noticed you were over there. Michael Messer (michaelmesser.co.uk/) is releasing a line of metalbody guitars similar to Republic's. Also the Amistar line from the Czech Republic looks nice - should be somewhat affordable from where you are. Again, caveat emptor.

Check out the 'Rogue' line at Musician's Friend...
the good... cheapest 'bro available
great volume, louder than some 'quality' instruments I've heard.
decent tone, at least equal to Regals, etc.
the bad... cheap parts - I've replaced the tail piece and nut, and used a little hot melt to quieten buzzing and rattles under the reso cover.
I've played/owned the spider version for about 3-4 years. If you don't mind making minor repairs, a good economical choice.
...in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength...
