I've used the Beard Special 29s (.018-.056) and the GHS semi-flat nickel (.016, .018, N28, N36, N46, N56) on my Gold Tone Beard Deluxe, and most recently on my Gann curly maple I've got the Tim Sheerhorns from GHS (SH 1600 set-LJ17, LJ19, SH28, Sh36, Sh46, SH56). I can't really say which I prefer. I need to pay closer attention :) I'm always interested in what others have found works good for them.

dobro? yeah bro! - Posted - 08/02/2008: 12:34:59
last time i strung up, a set of John Pearse, pretty heavy. i busted my D string a couple weeks ago and was too broke to buy a whole new set, so i have an oddball bronze-wound low D. has anyone used flatwound strings? i might try that next time i string...

I'm an old folk... am I now suppose to switch to special 29's ? Are they more absorbant ?
El Dobro - Posted - 08/04/2008: 16:52:38
With the EJ42's, I was thinking of going a little thicker on the .026 G because I would always kill the winding on it. Lately they last just as long as the rest.
El Dobro - Posted - 08/04/2008: 16:59:31
Back when I started buying them, they were the only choice for resonator guitar strings at the store I bought them at.
BoiDetroit - Posted - 08/04/2008: 22:11:33
.015 .019 .024 .030 .038 .056 for E major tuning (E B G# E B E) I have to buy the strings individually because most resophonics sets are G major and the E major sets are not bronze wound.

EJ42s...my only problem is that I can't ever find them in local stores
. Most stores don't even know what a dobro is around here!
straycat - Posted - 08/05/2008: 06:56:53
martin SP...they are inexpensive and sound good...i change strings sometimes everyday.
I use the extra lts. on my Reso-rocket becaue I tune into open a a lot and there is a lot of stress on the neck...to be honest I think the guitar sounds just as good as when i used med.

Euphonon String Company - buy in bulk custom gauge, super cheap, change often.

I'm a fan (so far) of John Pearse G-tuning sets for resophonic guitars. I use them on my Dobro and on one of my Nationals. My other choice is usually the D'Addario's (EJ42).
I used to use the Elixir Resophonic Guitar sets but over time have decided I'm happier with the sound and tone of the Pearse or D'Addario sets.

John Pearse G-tuning strings here as well. They hold up, and when they start going dull, they all go at the same rate.

I have tried 3 different brands
GHS SH1600
D'Addario EJ42
and Martin
So far the I like the SH1600 for there long life and holding there tone,
but I like the EJ42 for there Volume and tone
so I'm stuck one or the other

Been using EJ42s on the Meredith, Lazy River and OMI for some time now. Used many different brands but due to the difference's in guitars they all sound different with the 42s. Also change about once a month, sometimes sooner. Pickngrin, DB.

GHS 1650's are fine strings. Currently have a set of special 29's on my Tut Taylor Carolina and a set of Scheerhorn Cryos on my Rayco.
All sound good.
harperk31794 - Posted - 08/07/2008: 05:24:13
Currently using Beard 28's, didn't like having to pull the 20 on the high B string, the low strings are identical to the Beard 29's however the high strings are slightly smaller 17, 19, 28, 36, 45, 56 on the 28s versus 18, 20, 29, 36, 45, 56 on the Beard 29s.
I thought the high strings were a little brighter and I like them a little heavier than the 16, 18, 26, 35, 45, 56 of the EJ42's.
But my ears ain't good enough to tell any tonal difference, I just like the heavier high strings but not quite as heavy as the Beard 29's.

I'm using Beard Special 29's on my PBGT solid mahogany and they work great!
Meantooth Grin - Posted - 08/07/2008: 16:33:50
I don't buy expensive strings, i have really sweaty hands so for me I change my strings too much to buy really expensive ones.
gauge is a lot more important to me than brand.
i don't use anything lighter than 12s on any of my guitars including my electrics.
On my tricone I use:56, 46, 34, 26, 17, 16 for lower tunings like D and G.
I like the Ernie Ball Power Slinky phosphor bronze, they dont have great string life but when you have sweaty hands like me they all last about a day anyway!
Hooked on Resophonics - Posted - 08/08/2008: 07:56:44
Right now I have John Pearse Acoustic Mediums (13,17,26,35,45,56) with the 13 switched to a 15. Phosphor Bronze, on the Estralita in open D & G tunings.
I was using the Michael Messer's National Strings but they are pretty expensive, even at a discount. I can still get 2 packs of Pearse's + 2 extra 15's for less than the cost of one pack of Messers, and the sound/feel is comparable.

I have an OMI 8 string, Beard makes the only good bronze 8 string set [16-59] before that I used C6 pedal steel sets and threw 2 away but they were steel wound so they didnt sound all that good.

I use Duck's Deluxe Nickel Alloy .016-.018-.028w-.036-.046-.056. They have a nice tone and seem to last longer for me.

I use D'Addario EJ42 or EXP42. I am really getting good life and lasting tone from the EXP42 strings.

I have a Goldtone round neck Deluxe that is currently strung with Martin Clapton's Choice Mediums. I like the tone, but would prefer a bit more volume. I notice that most of the posts here recommend a heavier gage, but no one says whether they're playing a round or square neck. Does it matter?

Well, if someone says they're using EJ42's, you can bet it's squareneck style.
Don
Thanks, Don. I take it from that that nearly all the posters here are talking about strings for square necks and that those same strings would not be used on a round neck. That answers my question (stupid as it might have been. I'd still like to know, then, what kind of strings some round neck players prefer.

Mike Auldridge recommended to me the D'Addario J42's. I might not play like him but my beard can sound like his.

I guess I'll just throw in and say that I have found GHS PL1650's (Phil Ledbetter sets) to have the right sound for my OMI Hound Dog squareneck. I run my Dobro tuned '2 steps down' to FACFAC, so that might shape my opinion. I use slacked tuning on my Flat top as well (down to D, and my electric slide (D major).
I originally began using for lower string tension for less bellying on old flat tops, but got to prefer the tunings. I do have to resort to a (PITA) Capo for the Dobro to play the tunes I prefer playing at fret 5, to avoid calling out a B flat song to a group I'm pickin' with.

I used the GHS Leadbetter set until I tried the GHS Scheerhorn set, much tighter, louder and last longer. As Tim says, don't leave them on to long(because they'll still sound good) you'll break a 3rd string.

Let me start out by saying I have tried ALL the strings listed in this thread. Now let me say that for the amount I play, I spend the $11.95 and buy the D'Adario EXP42's as they are coated and last the longest. They have a great equal tension across the neck and bridge. Also they respond to my playing(i.e. if I want a bright or warm tone I get it). However I change my strings every two shows, which equals twice a month.

So far D'Addario J42's have sounded the best on my GoldTone maple square neck, but have been inconsistent - I've had a couple of sets that died very fast and I've had the same experience with J17's on the flattop.
GHS 1650's and Beard 29's were pretty good but didn't have the volume or sizzle of the J42's.
D'Addario EXP42's lasted longer than anything that I've tried but sounded a little bit muffled. I just got some Martin Bluegrass nickel and I don't know if I'll try them on the acoustic or the lap steel. I've been liking GHS 1600 semi-flat nickel on the electric.
Has anyone tried Black Diamonds? I've heard that they're pretty good and they're cheap.
