I have tried both the Quarterman, and the Beard cones, is it just me or are the Beards that much better? sure seemed that way to me

To each his own my friend! I hate to compare it on THIS website, but I learned this with banjos and tone rings, some LOVE brand A, some HATE brand A. Some are not deeply inclined one way or the other. Bright vs deep, soft vs hard, etc.

mine has a Quarterman. i just heard a guy playing a Beard, which is the first Beard i've ever heard in person and there was a definite difference. long story short when i upgrade i'll probably go with a Beard.

I doubt that hearing a different cone in a different instrument is going to tell you much about what it would sound like in yours. Beard and Quarterman--and I guess now Scheerhorn--cones are all top-quality parts. The main reason Paul started making cones is to ensure a supply of high-quality cones after the Quarterman cones are no longer available.

Paul Beard has learned how to make consistently good cones now and I wouldn't hesitate to use one. I would not expect a significant difference when changing from a Quarterman to a Beard, everything else being equal.

When Quarterman cones are no longer being made, no doubt there will be a market for NOS that will make us all wish we had stockpiled a few.

I believe the reason Beard started making his own cones was because JP Quarterman was not always reliable in fulfilling his orders.

Also, another top cone to look for is the Tut 23 cone from Tut Taylor.

Yeah, the Tut 23 along with his new pre-leveled spider would be a great option for an upgrade.

I have a Gold Tone Beard Deluxe which has a Beard cone from what I understand. I also have a Gann curly maple made by reso maker Don Gann, which has a Quarterman cone. I have never swapped them to see if it would make a noticeable difference. Both are very decent resos with the GT Beard having a mellower sound. When I asked Mr. Gann which cone he used in mine he told me it was a Quarterman, and he also added that he was having problems getting them so didn't know how much longer he could build them using the Quarterman. I found that a bit unusual, but Rzn8ter's post saying they are no longer available would explain why.

Any day is a good day to play music, and today is a good day.

A rookie question.
Why wont quarterman cones be available anymore?

Thx

He's talking about when John Quarterman stops making them. As it is, delivery of his cones seems to be spotty.

I believe Mr. Quarterman is getting along in years. Paul Beard cited this specifically in his decision to start making his own cones.

That link gave me a timed-out session. I found this one: reso-nation.org/forum/2008/07/...t-23-cone but I don't know if you have to be logged in to access it.

The gist of the article is that the Tut 23 is indistinguishable from the Quarterman cone in terms of how it sounds. Apparently they've been making these cones for use in Taylor instruments for some time, and just recently decided to make them available separately.

Its great to have another top quality choice, in cones. For years all we had was Quarterman and if they weren't available, then it was bad news for upgrades. Ive waited amny weeks for them to arrive in the shop after being out of staock and hard to locate. Its good to have Beard providing great cones-

Also good cones are fairly cheap and there are only a few "good" ones unlike ojnab tone rings that are nearing record prices and have some people chasing around after each one cause they can't be happy with the one they have in their ojnab at the moment.

Most well made resos are maxed out with a good cone, spider, inserts, and a good setup.

Too bad it aint that easy to satisfy the ojnab crowd.
(yeah I pick one of them too but I am easy to satisfy)
PLAY the darn thing!

Like my ojnab's that still have their original tonerings, my resos still have their original cones.

Do all of your ojnabs have the original heads also? Because that is the part that resonates like a cone. I would not compare the tone ring to a cone. The tone ring seems more like the sound well in our dobros.
