I am getting close to fitting a neck onto my first squareneck dobro. Body is made, top and back are coming together and I am getting excited. I have heard that instead of a 90 degree angle with the neck heel to the body there is a 1 degree offset. Is that number right, and is it to make the strings parallel to the fretboard once it is strung up.

Tom cut it about 1 to 1 1/2 degrees.. You dont want the strings too low at the nut because of the dobro capo has to fit under them but its not like a guitar where everything has to be spot on...Doug

Thanks Doug. I eyeballed it and 1 and a half degrees seemed about right to me. Having a good saw helped in making the precision cut. I had left plenty of extra meat on the end of the neck and made several practice cuts and tried it on for size until it looked about right. That has been my modus operandi. I have micrometers and by profession, am an expert measurer but eyeballing things seems to work well for me. Thicknesses, placement of supports and braces, and all is very nonscientific. I do measure when putting frets on though.
Don''t squat with your spurs on.

Tom and Doug,
When you talk about the offset, do you mean that you are bringing the neck closer to the front of the guitar, or closer to the back of the guitar?

Some of the prewar California Dobros had a top that was angled back about 1 degree once you went past the coverplate. The neck was on the same plane as that part of the top.

Darryl.. Meaning the neck will lean 1-11/2 degrees to the back from the plane of the top...Doug
