I'm currently playing a PBGT solid mahogany and while I think it is a great reso, I'm thinking of jumping to the next level sometime in the near future. What reso would be considered the "next level" up from the one I'm currently playing?

Yes it would be sweet to jump right in to a Clinesmith, Meredith or something along the lines of a MA-6 but we all know what the cost of this jump would be in terms of dollars and cents. Needless to say, a 4K reso is not in the picture right now.

So, what reso would be a significant jump from the PBGT solid mahogany without getting in to the high dollar "boutique" resos??? All thoughts and experiences appreciated.........

Do you want to stay with a Regal size reso or get a larger body for a bigger sound? MitchC's Beard R is an option, but the body size is identical to your PBGT. Dick DeNeve builds large body resos for around $2000, you might give him a call at 315-695-6342.

It's a buyer's market right now. If you are patient and keep an eye on Ebay, this forum and ResoNation you can find a used Beard E or Mike Auldridge Signature in the $2500 - $2800 range. I've never seen a used MAS or Beard E go for under $2500, so if you can buy right your downside is pretty limited. Good luck!

Actually, I would prefer something a bit different than the one I now have. Not that there's anything wrong with the style or size, I would just prefer to do something a bit different on the next one.

Maybe a large open body with sound post construction and maybe F holes instead of screens. I'm just looking for something that will provide a significant diffence in a bigger sound and tone; something that provides good sustain, rings like a bell up and down the neck postion, has good note separation with great lows, mids and highs.

I intend to keep my PBGT solid mahogany because I think it's a great guitar......but would like to have another that is different and more "substantial" if that makes sense. This aquisition is not a major priority right now but I'm trying to plan ahead and look in the right direction for my next reso.

What is the "next step" you are looking for? Gold Tones are good resos, and when set up well are on the borderline of really good resos. I assume that price is your determining factor - less than $4K.

You might look at Gregg McKenna's work. They are soundwell style. So they won't have that big, throaty, open, modern sound. But the prices are reasonable and folks I've heard from like them. mckennaguitars.com/

Dick DeNeve builds open bodies. I have one (I got it used for about $1300) and it's a big, booming bad boy. He doesn't have a website, but can be reached at:

Check out B&B Resophonics. Dan Brooks makes a great reso for about $2600. Modern, open-body style. I just received a custom quilted maple from him, which cost more than his standard resos because of the expensive wood. And it is superbly crafted, loud, sweet, and modern sounding. I have heard good things about Red Line Resophonics as well. redlineresophonics.com/ His list at around $2000.

I know some folks who have Adams resos who like 'em. Open bodies for less than $2K. adamsresonator.com/guitars/index.htm

So there are lots of choices and possibilities. In addition to watching ebay, etc., for used "high end" resos at bargain prices.

I have a Red Line Reso (solid Mahogany # 2) and it keeps getting better and better everytime I play it... Steve's work is "PAR EXCELLANT" and he works to make sure your association with Red Line is the BEST....
