I posted this question on another forum and didn't get much of a response so I am posting here.

A friend had mentioned a technique called "rolling the cone" that Gene Wooten used on his reso's to enhance sound. The process supposedly involves the use of a rounded wooden (popsicle?) stick to somehow work the top of the cone.

Does anyone here know of this process and if so, can you provide a better explanation of the process and what it accomplishes?

Thanks,
Al

Gene worked on my "74 Dobro years ago and he did roll the edge of the cone after he shaped it to raise it up to max height. He also bent the cover plate palm rest up to clear the strings. Kinda cracked the plating.

(I edited this post after removing the cone and being enlightened by the obvious!)

O.K...

I just took the cone out of my Goldtone/PB and it all seems obvious now. The downward pressure on the cone over time has pushed the lip out against the routed groove in the reso body wedging it in place so that it can no longer float, Rolling the outer lip in slightly reduces the overall diameter (restores it to original dimensions) so that it is not wedged. It also slightly raises the cone.
