I recently did a reso the same size as a d-28..I used mahogany for the back and sides and sitka spruce for the top. I used the soundpost and baffle system and it is a really sweet sounding box..No traditionalm sound but very woodsy and beautiful tone..Has anyone else tried this size reso.?? Doug

I am in the middle of building a larger bodied dobro right now. Not quite dreadnought size though. How is the top built and braced on yours? Thickness, plywood underneath, etc.

Don''t squat with your spurs on.

Dobro used to have a model 114 that was similar to a dreadnaught and there were also the Sho-Bros that that had a large body that was like a D. Gibson tried a couple of large bodied dobros. They had four screen holes and IIRC 7 string necks.

The one pictured in my avatar is about the size of a dread size guitar, a little different shape here and there. Depth is 4.5" at the lower bout and 3.75" at the upper bout. The back is a 15' radius.
Support post and baffles(sort of ) and I also tried a new neck attachment method.(New for me anyway)

Thanks all. I was surprised at its big sound. Now if I could only play one...I built this just because it was the only mold and bending size equipment I had.. I later supercharged a Johnson--now JOBRO-took out the soundwell and put in braces and a tonering of plywood to the top enlarged hole to 10 9/16 and installed a Quaterman cone and 14 spider...It is a very traditional sounding box and super loud..This is a way to get a nice reso for cheap. Tom Jr. I dont recall the exact thickness of my top, but somewhere around 150 with a plywood tonering out of 1/2 cabinet grade plywood..The back braces were on a 16 ft. radius and I turned dowels from sitka spruce for the post and cut a groove with the table saw blade in one of the braces and installed a bent piece of plexi. in this groove for the baffle..Hope this helps you..Doug
