For grins I got my old ProPik metal band/nylon thumb pick out tonight and I think I like the sound of it better. The Blue Chip doesn't seem to have as much attack and feels sluggish by comparison. I'm thinking about filing it to match the profile of the ProPik. Anybody done this?

I'd think probly not  because if you order a Blue Chip pik and don't like it for some reason you can exchange it or I think you can get your money back less shipping

But once you alter the pick in any way IT'S YOURS

But it is yours and you can  try to FIX it to your liking

You may be able to go to Ron's and trade it for a different one and if not you could probly get your money back at Resogat

I like my BC but I still use my Golden Gate Extra Heavy a lot and if anything ever happens to the Blue Chip I will be a Golden Gate Guy

Next time I order I'm gonna get a  few more  GG

I  think that if I used the BC  all the time that I would probly be proclaiming the wonderfulness of it and eventually I may be doing just that

Right now my thumb feels  a little out of sync with the BC

I am still in the try this & try that stage and I like how the different pick combinations change the feel and the sound

I have three bars and I use all three and that number will probly grow until  I find the ONE ( a stainless steel Lapdawg ) or a reasonable facsimile somewhat thereof

When you get the new BEARD everything is gonna change in a BIG way

Enjoy the ride

They have two different lengths as well, a shorter one and a longer one. Also, there is the banjo version which is thinner if you want a slightly sharper sound.

The banjo player I play with ground his down to his desired length. He said it took a while, that stuff is tough.

David, which BlueChip do you have?

I have one each of both the standard reso with the longer blade, and the JD (Crowe) reso pick with the shorter blade, and I prefer the latter. The longer blade version has sort of become the backup.

I have never used a Pro Pik thumbpick so I don't know how it compares, so it's never occurred to me that the BlueChip lacks "attack" by comparison,  but then I'm not a real hard thumb picker. But of all the thumbpicks I have used over the years nothing is in the same league as the material used for the BlueChip. I remember when Jerry Douglas started using them several years ago he said that he likes how it "glides" across the strings.

Joe, Blue Chip picks has been very kind to Reso Gat through the years and we appreciate their help very much but we don't sell, exchange or refund money for Blue Chip Picks. You must be thinking of another venue.  We will have a couple picks to raffle among many other items.

I've had this one well over a year so, I wouldn't even think of asking them to exchange it. That's why I was thinking I may as well try to make it suit me better. It is slicker than snot! I do like that. I'm thinking if it were a bit pointier that might give me the same attack as the ProPik? Mine has JDR stamped on the pick material on the inside so I guess it's just the standard JD Reso? I picked up an extra ProPik today while I was out since the other one was showing some wear. I also grabbed as set of their Reso finger picks. I like 'em pretty good. Not sure I like them any better than my 1941's though.

I was thinking he might be able to sell it or trade it to  somebody

Good Idea! If the Regal doesn't sell before then, it'll be coming with me too!

I noticed the difference between the attack of the Pro-Pik finger picks and the JDR Blue Chip thumb pick.

I bought another JDR BC and used my Dremel tool to narrow the shape of the BC so it was more pointy...that didn't solve the problem, so there's forty bucks down the sh!tter...

I'm thinking that if I square up the soft rounded edges of the BC, the attack would be sharper, but I haven't gotten around to laying out another 40 clams on the experiment...not sure if I don't want to risk the money or if I'm just lazy...laugh

I think you should consider trying the banjo BC.  It is slightly thinner, longer and to my ear has a sharper tone than the reso models.  They sometimes run free shipping deals and you can always return it if you don't alter it.

Wayne, I'd like to give that a try, but not sure exactly which banjo pick you are recommending...the BCT-1? or the BCT-JD?

Also, where you do hear about the free shipping deal? On their website or are you on a mailing list?

captbanjo - Posted - 06/21/2016:  09:43:54

Dane, I actually use the short models for reso and five string banjo and for my Irish tenor banjo (I play fingerstyle) I use the longer reso model: BCT-RESO-1L . I do this because I wanted a darker tone for the bright banjo but more length. I have three of their thumbpicks and two flatpicks.

I'm on an email list. You just missed a free shipping date on Father's Day, unless they have extended it. Anyway, I would call them and spell out exactly what you're looking for in tone and shape and they'll steer you in the right direction. I'm guessing the JD Crowe model but you should check to be sure.

I took my dobro with me on vacation and while playing outside, the Propik sounded thin so I switched back to the BC and it sounded much better, more bottom end. Maybe it's just the room here. There was a room in my old house that could make anything sound like crap LOL.
