The only cones that I have seen with spirals were imports...If you want a good sound stay with Beard and Quaterman and you cant go wrong..Someone was telling me that Tut Taylor was making cones but I`m not sure as I havent seen one yet....Doug

Where have you been reading that??? I think the opposite might be more true.

There are a few types of cones out there. My hand spun Quarterman has spirals, they are little groves from the spinning process. Also new and old national cones have very pronounced spirals. The only cone I have seen in person without spirals was a piece of crap stamped cone from an OMI Dobro. Check out my photo album....there are pictures of national cones, do your spirals look like that?

If you look at the fourth picture at the largest size you can actually see two different types of spirals on the same cone!!

Click on the link below then click on the picture to make it bigger,

There are good cones with spirals (not to be confused with spinning marks) and crappy cones with spirals. Same goes for cones without spirals. The current National cones have a shield stamped on the cone.

I'm not a fan of any import cone, with or without spirals.

YMMV

There is a piece of wood in the picture, it is on top of the "T" it makes the top of the bridge, the strings terminate on a standard tail piece.

What make is the dobro you are working on?
