Is one or the other (leather or felt) prefered as padding under the front of a dobro tailpeice? If leather what adhesive do you use?

I've used both and never had to glue it.

Since we're on the subject of tailpiece padding, is this a typical element of a good setup from a reputable music shop (i.e., Elderly)?

I would imagine most builders are putting something under the tailpiece. My 'horns all came with felt.

I have a 1/8 inch piece of leather that sits there without being glued.

I have a piece of unsecured leather on all of mine. It seems like I saw a video of Jerry Douglas years ago and he had a spongy looking thing between the strings and the coverplate also, probably for wolf tones.
Don''t squat with your spurs on.

Have you checked a Beard guitar to see the felt is installed?

No I haven't Don. I did install it with a peice of 1/8" leather under the leading edge. I think that might have been too much for my instrument as it seems like it could use a little more pressure on the bridge inserts.

Look at my post I have a photo of what I did and the pressure holds it in .

I'm missing you post somewhere monradon. Today now that my strings have resettled in the bridge inserts (after the tailpeice change) my new buzzes are gone. The leather I installed is being held by pressure under the leading edge of the Beard unit.
