Don't know how much the Regal will cost you, plus upgrades. I have the Goldtone Beard roundneck (PBR) and I;m very pleased with it straight out of the box. It's set up at Beard Guitars and the sound is very loud with plenty of sustain. I have varied the tones by using a ceramic slide on phosphor bronze strings, and also a brass slide with flat wound strings. Hope this helps.

The above is a link to the gold tone beard roundneck at musicians friend. Currently retailing for $569.00. A good set up will cost you at least $150.00 for the regal with new cone, bridge insert and nut. So add that to the price of the regal and then you can make your decision. Brian

Not all Gold Tones are set up by the Beard shop. Those that do will have a sticker inside stating such.

I had on older import Regal [RD-65] which i had to send to Paul Beard's shop to update. After that it sounded [ and still does sound pretty good]. At our school we have a new BEARD Goldtone and a frind of mine has one also.. THEY SOUND BETTER out of the box and are actually cheaper than getting a Regal and getting Paul to update it. I havent played the new Beards just the orig. one. The newer [ more expensive] ones LOOK pretty GOOD. but the org. sounds better than anyting I've played in its price range.

A GT-Beard should be a better guitar, but no way would I buy it from MF just because its a tad cheaper. Not knocking them, they just don't know jack about these instruments, and I doubt very much it would be a Beard setup or a good shop setup coming from them, you'd have to take it somewhere else. Buy from a reputable dealer who will set it up or guarantee it is a Beard setup guitar. Think Elderly, Janet Davis, etc.
Some people swear by Regal Black Lightnings, some people get real junkers. I bought (and returned) two or three Regals when I was first starting two or three years ago that had ridiculous, infuriating quality issues. Oversized cone jammed so tight into undersized soundwell that I had to pry it out, sound well so far off center there was basically NO lip along one side, gobs of glue inside, chipped/cracked headstock, bone nut just fell off, tuners at all goofy angles and tuner-screws overtightened until they stripped the wood, blotches on the fretboard, just some of the things I recall. QC and consistency has been a common issue with Saga as with most Asian-made instruments. At the very least if you get a Regal, again go with a reputable dealer and not a musical instrument dumping house like Musicians Friend/Guitar Center.

I've delt with Beard [ resophonic outfitters],Elderly and Janet Davis and I AGREE- get all your stuff from good dealers. these three were GREAT for me.

Salut, les barbus! Hi, bearded people!
I just received my new PBSD 2 hours ago. It's really a good and beautiful instrument (and cheap!).
I watched by the holes of the coverplate and can't see anything but the Beard signature on the cone.
Should I see this sticker ?

Regals are pretty good dobros. I have one myself and I really like it. The Beard Gold Tone is pretty good too. Either way, both dobros are pretty good instruments.
Favorite Dobro: Regal
Favorite Strings: D-Addario
Favorite Dobro Tune: Amazing Grace
