I'm looking to pick up another dobro to go along with the goldtone I have now. I've narrowed it down to the a nice Adams maple/birch and the Ickes signature model. I'm looking for something with a brighter / more aggressive sound than the goldtone. I think the Ickes has the sound I'm after (based only on web video clips), but the Adams has me interested as well.
Can anyone comment on the general sound of the Adams dobro's?

I've played lots of resos, custom and import. I've enjoyed, and even at one time owned a W/S Rob Ickes model. That said, I prefer the similarly priced Adams and McKennas I've played. They're handmade, and you can feel and hear and see the difference in quality and sound. I've also read good things about Redline.

Before deciding I'd give Dick DeNeve a call at 315-695-6342, see if you can stretch your budget a bit and afford one of his D bodies. You'll get better tone and a bigger sound than the alternatives.

I believe that he specifically asked about two models, an Adams and the w/s, of these two ( and I've played and owned both) they are both good and whichever one you choose should make you happy. However, the Adams is a custom, specifically made for you, and there is always a person to talk with if you need to. Phil

Personally, I recommend the Adams. I own one of Adams' higher end guitars (his Claro Walnut Professional) but every Adams I've encountered has been marvelous.
Regarding the sound of an Adams, I would call them deep and powerful, and completely lacking the annoying strident whine that I often hear in low-end imports. I went with the walnut because I wanted a mellow yet powerful Dobro; the maple-on-birch that you mentioned would be a little brighter and slightly more strident.
