Can somebody recommend a good DVD that shows the major and minor open scales in G C D A BM
Am etc ? thanks . I can find them on YouTube, but that uses up my high speed data real quick. Rather have a DVD to work on the scales. Thanks
Terry

Not sure why you just don't sketch them out yourselves?

GO ONLINE and check out
the TAO of DOBRO
the internet has so much stuff available to anybody that will take time to look
it is almost unreal how much FREE stuff is out there for someone learning how to play any instrument has available

I said book, but I meant DVD I like to be able to watch the scales , and

learn them that way. Just my prefferd way. I just said it takes my high speed data, and after I use it up I can't even download a YouTube video. Never mind y'all, I'll do a search and find something. ??

You should join Artistworks with Andy Hall. He shows you all of those scales, open and closed position, as well as major and minor pentatonic scales in several different patterns to cover the fretboard. Only downside is it’s not free but it’s a great bang for your buck!

Sorry, I went back and read your first post after I finished my reply.  Andy’s school isn’t a DVD and it would use data same as YouTube does.  Good luck on your hunt though!

Rob Ickes has a scales and arpeggios dvd (or download) on Homespun.

Doctor Proctor - Posted - 04/16/2018:  02:46:22

one of the main things to remember about this site is to be patient
everybody has ideas about learning and using some of all of em would be beneficial
sometimes when someone posts a topic they get immediate responses and sometimes it can take a week to
get the answer you're looking for

Doctor Proctor - Posted - 04/16/2018:  03:46:13

just typed in dobro scales and lottsa options available
and you don't have to download em
just watch em as many times as needed
everywhere I looked the Ickes stuff mentioned is only download
the early Ickes stuff which does not cover scales in depth is out there in DVD and some VHS
Troy has many free samples out there that would benefit anybody trying to learn dobro
a dude named Jacob Brallier has a FREE G scale lesson in which he explains how learning this pattern applies to all the SCALES
To get the ICKES dvd mentioned above you will probly have to find somebody that has it and is willing to let it go
but the internet is a big place AND ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE

jazzphil - Posted - 04/16/2018:  07:21:12

The Ickes dvd I suggested is currently available from Homespun.

It's part of a 3 dvd set which looks like it might be quite new. I purchased the fiddle tunes download last week. I like Rob's teaching style.

Thanks guys, yes the Jacob Brailler video is exactly what I'm talkin about. I'd like to find a DVD like that so to watch in slow motion each string played, and the pull offs / hammer on's . The Rob Eykes video should be a good one to. yes

billmccloskey - Posted - 04/16/2018:  14:37:10

Terry you can also get the Rob Ickes through a download from the Homespun site. It has the ability to slow down the playing as well. I use it since I never use dvd's anymore and it works well .

Bill, I ain't to bright when it comes to the internet and all the technical stuff. If I download the Rob Ickes video, will my high speed data continue to be used up even after downloading it? Sorry y'all I'm just an old fart.

BTW -- Does anybody know how to get in touch with Jacob Brallier.
Thought I might ask him about making me a video of other open scales like he did the G scale on you tube. Thanks

Doctor Proctor - Posted - 04/16/2018:  18:24:35

I had actually forgotten about Homespun
I bought lottsa stuff directly from them back when cassettes were the new thing
a friend gave me the Stacy Phillips videos
So there you go
but don't be surprised if exactly what you think you want turns out to not be exactly what you think you thought you wanted

What happened to the 1,3,5 at the nut? Pretty important for a beginner to see those methinks...

Thanks for the question Dane,

The nut is purposely left out so this chart becomes a virtual fingerboard along the lines of a slide rule.

For example, if you hide the first 2 frets you're not in the key of G any longer. If this is done the key you will be in is E with the 5s on the the 5th and 2nd strings being open, etc...

p.s. I actually own a oboe!

Terry, I understand your frustration with limited internet access or limits to data use. I'm a beginner and have looked at descriptions of a lot of learning material, print and otherwise. What I am seeing is that the DVD lessons don't really go much into learning theory, only enough to get you started on your playing journey, so to speak. There are print resources, some with CD's, but that doesn't really seem to meet your need to see what the teacher is doing. Perhaps one of the many teachers who have produced instructional DVDs will see a need here and produce one. Good luck with your search.
