Hi everyone!I'm Alberto from Italy, I'm 21, i have a band called Outagrass...I've been playing dobro for...2 weeks...(!) and I hope you'll help me...I'm going to purchase (on elderly.com) slide and strings and I need an advise!
Now i'm playing with a shubb, wich the handle is made of hardwood but i don't feel it "comfortable" (sorry for my english...), i want to try another kind of slide but...wich one for a beginner...?

Strings...I want the phosphor-bronze but I'm not sure about the brand to chose...

I'm a rookie reso player also, so take this with a grain of salt.

I've found the Lap Dawg and Shubb-Pearse #3 steels to be best for me. They're similar in design, but the S-P #3 fits my index finger a little better. If you've got fatter fingers, you may like the Lap Dawg. I haven't tried any of the expensive steels.

As for strings, I've had good luck so far with D'Addario Exp 42 and Beard Special 29.

Hope someone with more experience chimes in.

X2 for the Lap Dawg very easy to hold and a great tone, they are also like a weeble...they don't fall down!!

Those D'Addario Exp 42, seems like almost everyone but me uses them.

I like the Marten bluegrass reso strings they are nickel wound and last a lot longer than bronze wound strings.

Good luck with picks!! Just try them till you find one you like!!

Hi Alberto,

Welcome to the forum. I'd recommend D'Adderio Resophonic Guitar strings, the J42s phosphor-bronze set. Elderly has them for a good price, especially in bulk. I also like the GHS Tim Scheerhorn strings, which are phosphor-bronze but cryogenically treated so that they last longer.

For a steel, I'd also recommend the Dunlop Lap Dawg. Or, if you want to spend a bit more, the Scheerhorn Chrome. Great for pulloffs, fits your hand well, and superbly made.

Elderly also sells the Propik Reso fingerpicks and the Golden Gate perloid thumbpicks, both of which I'd recommend.

If you're looking for instructional material, the Rob Ickes DVD set and the Orville Johnson DVDs are perhaps the best I've seen (and I've seen and used just about all of them).

I saw the Dunlop Lap Dawg, and it seems to be really good for me...!
I'm very glad to be here in this forum, it's a good resource for resonator players, especially for outside-usa players like me from Italy...As you can see on resohangout we are only 2...and (off topic) it's also a good way to improve my english!

I would recommend either the D'Addario EJ-42 or GHS 1600 resophonic guitar strings. A resource such as juststrings.com has good prices for such strings and ships internationally.
The Regal RD-52 is a fine guitar for a beginner. I think there is a lot of music hiding in that guitar, and you will have fun finding it!

Hey Alberto,
I have tried many different things , steels, picks, and strings so here goes my choices;
Scheerhorn Stainless steel,
Slick Pick (thumb pick) the white or the orange (don't get the ones with just a little finger get the full size),
Older Dunlop finger picks .0225 or the .025, the newer Dunlop finger picks don't feel the same,,, the older ones are heavier
and strings I sorta like 2 brands
GHS SH1600
and
D'Addario EJ42
