Did somthing change ? I rarely log out of Fora on purpose, I just leave it open in its own window.
( Well I am seeing more pop up ads , but I'll be nice and just ignore them, if it helps keep a rather niche forum going .)

I always physically log in and out of the Hangout. Log in by typing in my alias and password into the required fields, log out by clicking the out arrow at the bottom of the page in windows 10.
Just a bit old fashioned I guess.

We don't have ANY popup ads on this site, unless you're talking about just the normal banner ads. But no "popups."
If you're seeing popups, that means you've got some malware on your system!
