Megan Lovell (now playing as "Larken Poe" with her sister Rebecca) plays this Rickenbacker lap steel.
What the heck is the attachment on the side? She plays the guitar without it in some videos, so it detaches.
They and another sister are descendants of Edgar Allen Poe.
Thanks a heap,

It's a device which allows her to play standing with a strap with Larkin Poe. Here is an excerpt form a Guitar World magazine interview from 5+ years ago:
"How did you start using that harness and playing standing up? It’s very cool.
Contrary to the name of the instrument, I knew I wanted to be able to stand and play the lap steel. I had performed a couple of shows sitting down and it felt limiting and energy draining to me. I started looking for a device or stand designed for lap steel, but couldn't find anything that fit the bill. A family friend owned a steel company, so I went to him and together we designed a holder for my Rickenbacker that allowed me to stand and play comfortably. Now I can run around on stage and interact with my band mates and the audience, although I can't tell you how many people come up to me after the show to ask why I'm holding the guitar like I do ("is it so you can see the frets?")!"
There are different ways to go about this of course - and I'm not a fan of the look, but it works great for Megan.
Here is a link to the full interview with video.

I love that holder/cradle/support thingy she uses for her Rick.
I play sitting down with my guitar on a piano stand and it's
comfortable but it would be so nice if I could get up and move around a bit with it.
Trouble is everything I build ends up looking like an ashtray.
I don't even smoke..........

…built the same thing 20 years ago out of wood. Paint it black and attach with Velcro...

And I thought the Power Slide was designed specifically for stand up playing. Apparently not.

The Asher lap steels have an accessory that can be bought. It is a bent aluminum piece that slides into holes on the instrument so one can stand up and play. Works very well but is kind of expensive for what it is.

I had a Power Slide a number of years ago and made this belly "shim" for it. It attached with strips of velcro, and had a 1/4-20 thread insert so I could mount it on a tripod also. Worked pretty good, but I sold the instrument. Those Power Slides are foam core (like a surfboard), but they do have a good screaming humbucker in them.

I still have a Power Slide but it never worked for me as a standup steel in its non-modified state. Brooks, I think the shim looks fairly cool.
Part of the whole deal of course is to look cool while you're playing.
I have seen some home made wooden "platforms" for standup with a strap, and though they might work, some are plain butt ugly.

Mark,
Pretty sure it was one of your reviews that caused me to buy the Asher Electro Hawaiian Jr. with belly bar (installed by Asher) that I have now.
I LOVE that guitar. I don't even have to think about it or how it fits when I stand up and play. It feels perfect.

We recently had a pretty long discussion about stand-up/strapped-on lap steels over on the Steel Guitar Forum. A lot of interesting ideas from people on how to make it work.

Don't know how he does it,but I sure love watching Jr. Brown play his stand up setup...
