Hoping to restore a 7-string National New Yorker lapsteel to its former glory if I can. It has no pickup cover / palm rest ofany sort.
I own a ‘39 6-string New Yorker with a painted brass pickup cover and wonder if that’s what might have been used on the 7-string as well; however, Before I go to great lengths to fabricate one of these, I wantedto make sure I’m on the right track.
I can’t find more than one pic of old 7-string New Yorkers for reference. The only photo shows a chrome palm rest of sorts w what looks to be a chrome plate under the strings. Doesn’t look stock as the tone control panel seems covered up.
If anyone has any knowledge in this area or can point me in the right direction, I’d appreciate it.

I don't have the knowledge, but I can point you in the right direction, provided you haven't already been there but came up empty.
Your best bet is The Steel Guitar Forum. There are members there who live, eat and breathe this stuff.
You can join for a lifetime membership of a whopping five bucks and can post your question in the Steel Without Pedals section.

I found a number of 7 string new yorkers on different sites, this one is pretty good: retrofret.com/product.asp?ProductID=8319

Not sure I’m talking about the same instrument, but here is a pic of a ‘39 7 String from the internet, along with some pictures of my National New Yorker 8 String double neck (which a previous owner converted to two 6 strings). Not sure if the year of mine, but I posted it because the palm rest looks the same as the ‘39 on the internet. It is made of painted wood, and the top is covered with the same arboritish/mother of toilet seat material as the rest of the instrument.

Bing might pull up some pictures of a 7 string. The steel guitar forum might have a picture to help you. I've only seen a six and a six turned into an eight. Parts might be found on eBay.
