I've been really enjoying Oz's style lately. Just wondering what everybody's favorites are? Obviously he has a few signature tunes... Fireball Mail, Wabash Cannonball, Dobro Chimes, etc. Any hidden gems out there I should check out? I've been working my way through the Roy Acuff catalog to find the tunes where he features prominently. Any favorites specifically among the Roy stuff?

My favorite is Oswald's Special, first song I learned to play and one that still makes me appreciate the contribution Oswald brought with his Hawaiian influenced approach to country. It is hard to find a version of it on the web, but Jim Warren does a great version of it youtube.com/watch?v=52564At_lrg. He also has lessons for it on his website oldtimedobro.com/tablature.htm
Edit: found a version by Oswald: youtu.be/gpGJkRDsLO8?t=1143

The 2 songs that made me ditch the sax and buy a dobro were CARRY ME BACK TO THE MOUNTAINS and THE END OF THE WORLD. To me, that sound is what the dobro was made to play.
To this day, whenever I begin to play, i play them both....one: I love the sound......two: If I'm out of tune I'll know it right away.

My favorite all time thing Os did was on Acuff's song, "I'll Forgive You, But I Can't Forget." Love his intro, break and fills all through that song.
Also: "Prairie Queen," "Kansas City Kitty," "Echo Chimes" and "Sailing Along." Shoot, I like all his stuff!

I feel like Oswald is at his best on those morbid Acuff songs: Precious Jewel (youtube.com/watch?v=9eOIH7JwfxU), Wreck on the Highway (youtube.com/watch?v=-4OWnWhwlTw), Lonely Mound of Clay (youtube.com/watch?v=NxCSqTZts5U). That--and not the bluegrass banjo style of dobro playing--is my favorite sound from the instrument. Os kind of illustrates my personal prejudice that the banjo and dobro sound best when they're not being played at the same time.
Recently I've been listening to this George Jones album where he does all Acuff songs backed by the Smoky Mountain Boys. allmusic.com/album/george-jone...003012125. It's full of great Oswald playing.

Pretty good backup players I hope to shout! I loved that program AMW and I wish it was still on. It would be one of the only things worth watching.
All those boys were smiling too

I`d have to say End Of The World is likely the best. What really makes it shine to me is all the variations he plays without compromising the medley at all, and he`s pretty much the only dobro picker that I`ve ever saw go high enough that he passes the end of the fret board. But I thing the prettiest tune he played was the one he wrote for his wife, titled Euneta. NOBODY matches his bar control, all slants forward and backwards, and with only the old round bar, which most country/bluegrass pickers claim cannot be played with. Lol
To me though, where he REALLY shines, is on backup to Roy`s voice. Some of my favorites are Wreck On The Highyway, Pins and Needles and others from the original Circle LP. Most of those tunes don`t even have dobro solo, but his intros and backup are exquisite.
Also, he was quite advanced on Hawaiian tunes. About the only Hawaiian recordings that I`ve heard that I`d say are better than Oswald are some of the 1920's-40's 'real' Hawaiians, Sol Hooppi types for instance.
