I'll repeat my FB post from yesterday:
The great Tony Rice passed away yesterday. My favorite acoustic guitar player of all time. He influenced thousands of players. I will never forget the first time I saw Tony play live as a member of The David Grisman Quintet in San Francisco in 1977 in the early days of Grisman’s “Dawg Music.” He was living here in the Bay Area (MIll Valley) and we had never heard anything like this innovative, cutting edge acoustic music. There will never be another Tony Rice. Rest In Peace sir.
This the Quintet in those days:

In '92 (or '91?) I saw a couple of Seldom Scene shows with Tony Rice filling in for Lou Reid. I'll never forget how the Scene guys watched on and were impressed by his playing just like us audience members. And Tony + Mike Auldridge standing there next to each other...as cool as cool can get.

Ricky Skaggs heralded Rice as “the single most influential acoustic guitar player in the last 50 years.

One of my favorite videos that feature Rice:

Each performance Tony would remind us of his love for Clarence White’s tone and style. Those fluid yet precise jazzy licks plucked to tonal perfection by hard tortoise shell. Not easy to do but the MASTER always made it look easy and sound so good.
RIP old friend...

so grateful for the many amazing performances Tony Rice left on recordings.
(If you haven't yet) read Still Inside — the story of his life, in his own words and others' recollections.
. . . and holy smokes what about his work with Jerry Douglas playing on Todd Phillips' acoustic jazz LP Released (1984).
How in the world is this recording out of print? It's Todd Phillips on mandolin and acoustic bass, with Tony and JD, + some Darol Anger fiddle parts.
