I have the opportunity to purchase a used tri-cone RM991 FOR UNDER $600
MY QUESTION IS, GOOD? BAD? Or INDIFFERENT? This is online so I can’t touch/play it first HELP?

(Note- I'm assuming round neck; does Recording King even make a squareneck?)

Some years back I purchased a Regal tricone for under $600. It's no National, but has been quite good to me for many years. Nice sound, fairly playable and you can't beat the looks. One issue I've found with some import reso roundnecks is that the action is a bit high, but if you bring it down there are saddle/tailpiece break angle issues. Do you know the seller and why they're selling? My seller just found that he wasn't into playing bottleneck as much as he'd thought. Are you a player who puts up with minor issues (action, neck profile) and just plays away? If so, I say go for it and start the new year off on a high note with a tricone.

I would say it's a pretty good price for that guitar in very good condition. I had the square neck version of that guitar and it was a great sounding instrument. The only thing I didn't like about it was the tuner buttons were a sloppy fit on the tuners. I ended up shimming the inside of the buttons, added a little epoxy, and screwed them back on. Yes the buttons were permanently attached but I thought it was worth the effort because the tuners themselves were were OK. I sold the square neck (991-s) for $400.00 to guy in CA who coached the US Olympic crew team years ago. I forget his name. He got a real good deal. Here's my archived ad. OH, in case you didn't know, they're heavy.

Cool- Recording King does make a squareneck. All my comments would still apply, except of course for the high action.

I got my Republic Tricone brand new with warranty and featherlite case on sale for around $700.00, so if that one is absolutely mint maybe. I'm pretty sure all of the Chinese Tricones are made by the same company, Aiersi.

Pretty sure you're right Wildeman. I think Imperial Guitars are Chinese built and ship from somewhere out your way in CA. All seem to be a pretty good bang for your bucks. I have one of their hybrid roundneck tircones. I like it. Here's a link to their version of the RK 991.

From FAQ's at Imperial Guitars.

Where are they made? It depends. Generally speaking, we source unfinished bodies from Korea or China and make the instruments here in California.

This is pretty much dead - on. I know that Republic instruments are sent to Austin as parts and assembled there. The assembly process is VERY important.

I also have the squareneck version.

I bought it here for about $500 3-4 years ago or more.

Hardly ever play it.
