I am looking at square neck tricones. National is too rich for my blood so an import is in the cards. Republic and Imperial seem to have same specs. I recall Republic going through a rough patch a few years back as far as quality and customer service. Any input here about either? A forum search did not yield much.

I've fooled around with a few tricones, the first being a Republic, second was a Recording King and the one I just finished with is an unbranded I got from Alibaba that is a nice copy of a wood bodied M1 National Resophonic, also very similar to the Imperial wood bldy.. The 2 brass body ones I just put in NRP cones and they came out okay but left me wondering whether it was worth the price($130). The points on the stock t-bridges were large for the holes in the NRP cones and I found the sound only marginally better than the Continental cones that were original. This recent project I decided to go whole hog and ordered the NRP cones, t-bridge and saddle($238), and upon completing the installation I found the sound was noticeably improved...but still not totally like a honkin' National. I fooled with the bridge, adjusting it 4 or 5 times, getting it lower and discovered something. It became a National, honk and all!!I was taught to set up the bridge on a spider by a great Dobro player, Junior Barber, a real tone master...but never thought to ask him if this method would carry over to a biscuit or tricone bridge system. I would make the saddle as high as the cover plate would allow, thereby maximizing the string down-pressure on the spider. From my recent experience I truly believe that excess down pressure, while being good on a spider setup, really detracts from a tricone setup, and I'll go out on a limb and say it will probably also deaden the response on a biscuit setup as well. I have been really enjoying my new "National."
