Hi folks
Iam looking at picking up a tricone and narrowed it to 1. A Regal RC51 or 2. A Johnson JM991
Do you think they are both made in Same factory?
Any views on either guitar?
Many thanks
Cheers
Donald

Hello. After some research here is what is available: The Regal RC51 was made in Czechoslovokia in early 2000's and are considered better instruments than the current instruments being made in China. It is purported that both the Regal and Johnson instruments are manufactured in same plant in China today. I did notice in reviews though, that the Johnson model has to be modified to sound and play well very often. This however is a common occurrence on most mass produced, cheaper imports. Very often players swap the cones for NRP Hotrod cones, and heavy guage strings. Hope this helps.

I bought a used RC51 about 15 years ago; it may/may not be Czech. Overall it has done quite well for me, after an initial trip to the luthier's for fret dressing and setup.

I haven't noticed much difference in all those Asian Tricones, mostly just esthetic. I bought a Republic and am happy with it but im reasonably sure that Regal, Royall, Johnson, Rec. King etc..are all made by the same place. I can't imagine it being very profitable for a bunch of companies to tool up and make metal reso's, one or two OEM firms makes way more sense to me.
