Day later I'm having some doubts on my price. I really like the instrument but afraid I paid too much. It's probably from the '70's - has marking of D 514 7 at headstock. It's the red/black sunburst. The back was ruined by the owner writing his name with a marker. Any assistance would be appreciated.

1977. Exactly what kind of assistance are you looking for?

Man I just past you last week. My sister in law lives in Harper's Ferry. Just looking for r ballpark price.

A value?
I'm always reluctant to give values and unfortunately I have nothing to go on here. No model, history, condition, upgrades.
Sorry.
I pass.

We know that you have a wood body Dobro ("D" = wood) and the serial number configuration indeed makes it a 1977. But as Howard wrote, we have nothing else to go on.
We need photos to be of any assistance. They're pretty easy to upload from a smartphone if you look at the instructions below the area where you enter a post.
Top, back, side, neck, headstock at minimum.
if you are having problems with getting the photos on here, let me know and I can coach you through it.
If all else fails, if you email me photos I can post them in the thread.

No worries. The deal is done, so I have to live with it!
Anyway, I think it is this one which indicates I paid a little too much, but I can live with it.

Well, my opinion is that OMI instruments are going to increase in desirability and value as the years go on so just enjoy your time with it and dont worry about it.
As far as taking off marker, don't use anything very aggressive, thats lacquer and can be easily damaged by things like alcohol or thinners. Maybe put a little lighter fluid on a rag and try a small circular motion.

So far as the PO writing his name on the back, try some car wax (100% carnuba; Mother's is a good one) or furniture polish, if these don't work you can try swirl mark remover (these are avail. at body shop suppliers like NAPA) buffing compound and a buffing wheel.

Not sure if this will work but when someone writes on a dry erase whiteboard with a non erasable marker you can write over it with a dry erase marker and then wipe it off. Maybe the same will work on the PO’s name.
